PostSubject: Re: The Star Trek Thread, 3.0   The Star Trek Thread, 3.0 - Page 19 EmptyWed Oct 03, 2012 4:50 am

I think it is in the Shatner book about the series, or maybe INSIDE TREK, but the show's gaffer got fired 3rd season and I think that may have impacted the look as much or more than Finnerman / Francis. I think he got canned for speaking up for the crew rights and he just got clobbered. I know Shatner liked the guy a lot, in his first book, that SHATNER WHERE NO MAN he seems very upset that the guy died ... and yet he didn't use his clout to get the guy his job back. (shrug.)

Hey i just checked and that 5254 stock was 100 speed, not 50. That could have made a huge difference ... I mean, in Super8 terms, you had k40 and e160, and while the 160 was grainy as hell, you could shoot at night and still get something on film.

I remember season 3 as much crisper with harder shadows, but in looking at a couple of dvds just now it didn't seem to be the case. Probably merits more study.

Yup, figured they made the switch and it makes the show look a lot newer than the first two seasons, for better or worse. The list I looked at said that stock was discounted in the late 70s.

I've been doing photography in recent years (both film and digital), but I never looked into the details of film stock for film and TV, so it makes a lot more sense to me now knowing the film speed used throughout the years with Trek and beyond. I can now imagine for DS9's "Trials and Tribble-ations" that it was a real son of a bitch to try to replicate the 50 speed look of TOS with 500 speed, so I have a lot more respect for Jonathan West doing what he can with what he had and of course getting notes from Finnerman must have helped.

Great shot.

Seeing the period cars in the bg really grounds that design for me, something about mid-century stuff.

In a way, the McQuarrie-messup-of-KenAdam's-design for the nevermade PLANET OF THE TITANS in the 70s also reflected its times, as that Ent was angular in a Lotus Esprit kind of way (not great for starships.)

Apparently ENTERPRISE may come out on Blu next year. Not that I'd buy it.

Maybe they can change the Klingon ship in "Unexpected".

I don't have any of the ENT seasons on DVD, so I might get S4 on blu.

"Body and Soul" (VOY Season 7)
An episode where we visit a society in the grips of an insurgency of "photonics" -- the highly advanced holographic beings who feel subjugated as a servant class and who have risen up against their oppressors. To avoid detection, the Doc hides in Seven's body. Any interesting notions this episode might contain are thrown out (we never even meet the holo-insurgents) in favour of tired, old "body switch" cliché jokes with Doc Seven, including numerous awkward sexual moments. Also, Tuvok solves Pon Farr by boning a hologram of his wife in a simulation of Vulcan. Yawn.
# of Crew: 137 Total -- 117 Starfleet, 13 Maquis, 4 Civilians
# of Shuttles: -4
# of Warp Cores: 2
# of Photon Torpedoes: -46
# of Gel Packs: 30
Distance to Alpha Quadrant: 24,758.6 lightyears
Opportunities to Get Home Missed: 11

I'm actually disappointed that the numbers I've been keeping track of are as reasonable as they are. Like, yeah, we're in the negative numbers for shuttles and torpedoes, and yeah we're out of the Delta Quadrant and in Beta, but I was hoping the whole crew would be dead and we'd've passed Earth by now or something.

Well before my week away when I drowned myself in Python films, Orson Welles and Colonel Blimp I watched The Motion PIcture: Director's Edition.

to my absolute surprise I bumped this up from a 2/5 to a 3.75/5 on my rankings. A drastic rise. Reminds me of when I bumped Thunderball from near bottom to top 6 of my Bond rankings. Maybe I was haunted by the spectre of Giannchino's pun track titles on the Star Trek XI OST. Hate the uniforms though.

Film needed more McCoy. TMP that is.

Saw TMP DE a couple nights ago as well. Still totally schizophrenic experience for me, as I find some bits to be very nice tries, but so many wrong calls! Still ranks 3rd on my list after KHAN and FINAL FRONTIER.

As with many films with multiple cuts (STAR WARS, SUPERMAN II, ARMY OF DARKNESS) there's stuff I like and dislike in every version, and I'd like to take a crack at assembling my "personal version".

I think a lot of the new effects choices in TMP DE are right (ignoring the subjective quality of the effects) -- choices like seeing all of V'Ger at once, for example. But I hate that they cut Decker's line "We all create God in our own image." Kinda the whole point of the movie, guys -- it was the title at one point, after all!

Been going through the Trek films with the girlfriend, and her opinions are so drastically different than what I'm used to from Trekkie Orthodox that it's quite refreshing.

Her rankings thus far are:

STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN
STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE
STAR TREK V: THE FINAL FRONTIER
STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY
STAR TREK GENERATIONS
STAR TREK III: THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK
STAR TREK (2009)
STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME

Whereas mine are:

1. STAR TREK: FIRST CONTACT
2. STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY
3. STAR TREK II: THE WRATH OF KHAN
4. STAR TREK IV: THE VOYAGE HOME
5. STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE
6. STAR TREK III: THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK
7. STAR TREK V: THE FINAL FRONTIER
8. STAR TREK: GENERATIONS
9. STAR TREK: INSURRECTION
10. STAR TREK: NEMESIS
11. STAR TREK

Unless he pulled a John Carpenter/DarkStar number and actually shortened the film, I don't want to imagine one either.

Transfigurations

aside from the alien, Beverly's interest in him this might well be (personally) the first 'O'Brien and favoured holodeck' episode. I'm sure on DS9 he does kayaking, if not hurt.

Life's little dullness.
