Cool, classic John Barry soundtrack for superb Michael Anderson spy thriller starring George Segal, Alec Guinness, Max Von Sydow, Senta Berger. Music first appears on LP from Columbia label in 1966. Inspired by fresh script from Harold Pinter, drawn from Adam Hall best seller, Barry avoids James Bond style of spy music, nods instead towards atmospheric West Germany locale, bleak theme of rising neo-Nazi movement. For the record, composer produces perfect album offering majority of his score in vivid stereo sound. Haunting main waltz-theme "Wednesday's Child" anchors, suspenseful cues play in contrast. Album also features Matt Monro in vocal version of theme. Intrada CD features album program in stereo from Columbia master tapes, courtesy Sony. For album fans, original artwork features on one side of booklet, all new artwork features on other side. Take your pick! John Barry conducts. Intrada Special Collection release available while quantities and interest remain!

Always loved Searching for Matty. Conjures a hot, sticky evening with the top down on Imperial Highway, with a big ass redhead at one's side and a pair of Wayfarers.
Its roots are in 40s/50s West Coast Jazz (as is a lot of Barry's music) i.e. Chet Baker, but somehow it still sounds contemporary. Maybe it's John Guerin's drumming, or how deep and resonant the voicing for the string chords are, or something.
Probably beyond words. Between the staves.

Barry's birthday was yesterday. Here's a quote I posted on my blog about Barry, made by Richard Attenborough:
“John Barry is never satisfied with what he does. John Barry, every day that he wakes up, believes that into his mind, into his soul, into his heart is going to come some magical rearrangement of notes and sounds and atmospheres which he is going to ultimately present and use, either to entrance you in a concert hall or to contribute to a piece of cinema. And it is because he is never satisfied and because he believes that there is still a peak to climb, there is still a magic element to discover, that he’s a great movie composer.”

Guitar Concierto de Juan Barri from DEADFALL
I still can't get over how beautiful this is. Rivals THE LION IN WINTER as my favourite Barry score. This is his equivalent of Herrmann's stirring Concerto Macabre from HANGOVER SQUARE.
A message to my Baker Street lovelies - Rave, Santa, Rave, Sabine and Dog - when I finally go, play this at my funeral.

A rare interview from the last few years of Barry's life. The Alzheimer's is quite noticeable here.

Sadly, I missed out on Intrada's QUILLER album. Hopefully there'll be a re-release, because I'm not paying $65+ for it.
I didn't know Barry was suffering from Alzheimer's either.

I heard about it on the FSM forums from someone who knew John and his family. It's not official, but then I don't know why you'd make up something like that.

I must've got in at the right time a couple of months ago got it for $20. Not a bad little soundtrack though when I got it loaded on my computer the track titles were jumbled but that's my stupid computer.
