Why? Because we all can use some more Al Swearengen in our lives.

Cocksucking seasons? Well, I suppose that gives a flavour of the dialogue.
So many good performances in Deadwood. Ian McShane, of course, but also Molly Parker, Paula Malcomson and countless others. Just a shame they wasted Alice Krige. Such a capable and underappreciated actress.
I think more people will weigh in on the discussion when America's online this evening.

So I assume the lack of interest in this thread suggests that I was in the minority with my love for this series?

Was the show cancelled for low ratings or just the cost of production?

I've never seen it.
It is on my list of things to watch, but that is a long list ... but I'll let you know when I start watching.

There are several reasons. This was before DVD sales became so important in deciding a shows chance of survival. It was a very costly show that apparently had garnered an audience that was too small for HBO's liking.
There's also rumors that Milch contract with Paramount was also a problem. And some of the overseas funding was only guaranteed for three seasons.
In short, all of the above and probably some other issues contributed to its end after three seasons.

So it just.... ends? Or perhaps "stops" is the better word. I still wanna plow through this series.

The story circulated that HBO let the location property go and it was subsequently bulldozed so the wrapup movie (planned as 4hrs of programming) couldn't happen, but apparently that was BS. I was just reading that the movie PRIEST shot on the old DEADWOOD sets, and that was years later.
I was REALLY pissed at the non-ending of the series, which I rank up there with THE WIRE AND CARNIVALE (the latter also got fucked over by HBO ... the network offered the creator a DEADWOOD like deal to wrap the thing up in a couple hours of movies, and the guy reportedly said, it ain't possible, why ruin all this good work with a shitty tie-knots-off finale?)
The show is still terrific, but 3rd season plays like a letdown when it doesn't lead to a fourth. There's almost nothing I find objectionable, except perhaps the number of denizens who are exceedingly well-spoken. Then again, maybe education standards were better back then, the student-to-teacher ratio HAD to have been better ...
First season's last ep has one of the most satisfying beatings ever put on film; I have a tendency to run it over and over again when the world seems especially poised to let real-life versions of John Huston's water magnate get away with murder yet again.

Not much love for mrs. Garrett's father then, trevanian? ;)
My favorite scene in that specific episode is the one at the very end, where Al exists his office and stares down at the bar and "his" people (Doc and Jewel dancing, Trixie smiling up at him and Dan going about his business) like a father looking down upon his very dysfunctional family.

Justified.
I love how in the next scene, he gets into a fight with those two, and loses.

Raylan Givens, old-fashioned type of man.
Beyond the obvious link of Tim Olyphant, its relevance in this thread is linked to how the character is almost a modern interpretation of Seth Bullock.

Every fan of DEADWOOD I've talked to has been pissed by the series just ending. So do I really want to jump on board and watch it if I'm just gonna be pissed? I guess it's better to have loved and lost and all that jazz. I just wish it were on Netlfix Instant.

It'd still worthwhile. We only own s1 & 2, but we did rewatch all 3 seasons in the last year. There's an inexorable quality, might be partly the music, not sure ... it is a show I never analyzed, just experienced.

My last reviewing of the series was nearly a year ago now.
It's a shame we never got another season, it was set up for Cy Tolliver to go off the deep end.
