Principal photography began July 9 on the dystopian action adventure Mad Max: Fury Road, a Kennedy Miller Mitchell production written and directed by Mad Max creator and Academy Award winner George Miller (Happy Feet). The film will be presented by Warner Bros. Pictures in association with Village Roadshow Pictures. It will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company, and in select territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.
Mad Max: Fury Road - the fourth in the franchise's history - stars Tom Hardy (The Dark Knight Rises) in the title role of Max Rockatansky, alongside Oscar winner Charlize Theron (Monster, Prometheus) as Imperator Furiosa.
According to Miller, "Mad Max is caught up with a group of people fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by the Imperator Furiosa. This movie is an account of the Road War which follows. It is based on the Word Burgers of the History Men and eyewitness accounts of those who survived."
Mad Max: Fury Road also stars Nicholas Hoult (X-Men: First Class) as Nux; Hugh Keays-Byrne (Mad Max, Sleeping Beauty) as Immortan Joe; and Nathan Jones (Conan the Barbarian) as Rictus Erectus. Collectively known as The Wives, Zoë Kravitz (X-Men: First Class) plays Toast, Riley Keough (Magic Mike) is Capable, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley (Transformers: Dark of the Moon) is Splendid. They are joined by supermodel Abbey Lee Kershaw as The Dag and Courtney Eaton as Fragile, both of whom are making their big screen debuts. Also featured in the movie are Josh Helman as Slit, Jennifer B. Hagan as Miss Giddy, and singer/songwriter/performer iOTA as Coma-Doof Warrior.
The cast is rounded out by well-known Australian actors John Howard, Richard Carter, supermodel Megan Gale, Angus Sampson, Joy Smithers, Gillian Jones, Melissa Jaffer and Melita Jurisic.
Miller is directing the film from a screenplay he wrote with Brendan McCarthy and Nick Lathouris. Miller also produces the film, along with longtime producing partner, Oscar nominee Doug Mitchell (Babe, Happy Feet), and P.J. Voeten. Iain Smith, Graham Burke and Bruce Berman serve as executive producers.
The behind-the-scenes creative team includes Academy Award-winning director of photography John Seale (The English Patient); action unit director and stunt coordinator Guy Norris (Australia); editor Margaret Sixel (Happy Feet); production designer Colin Gibson (Babe); Oscar-winning costume designer Jenny Beavan (A Room with a View); and makeup designer Lesley Vanderwalt (Knowing).
Shooting on Mad Max: Fury Road is taking place in Africa with the support of the Australian government. Originally slated to be shot in Broken Hill, New South Wales, Australia, the production was forced to relocate due to severe flooding, rendering the Australian landscape unsuitable for the film. The rain turned the area into an oasis instead of the post-apocalyptic terrain that is the setting for Max's world.
Mad Max: Fury Road is in development and stars Nicholas Hoult, Zoë Kravitz, Tom Hardy, Charlize Theron, Riley Keough, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Nathan Jones. The film is directed by George Miller.

I'm not crazy about the Mad Max flicks or George Miller, but I'm interested in this.

Yes, but all hopes for a Apocalypse Now type film of depth with Mel are gone.
I think that Number three, thunderdome was mistakenly jammed full of high rank American actors and lost its raw appeal, becoming a parody of what the fanchise was supposed to represent.
While the orignal director is on board for version four, why cant more Australian actors be used this time?
There are plenty of successful (high box office figures now) so why not go back to being authentic than just another hollywood blockbuster that just presents glitter and not substance?
John Howard, Richard Carter, supermodel Megan Gale (WHY ???), Angus Sampson, Joy Smithers, Gillian Jones, Melissa Jaffer and Melita Jurisic.: sounds like compromise second tier aussie actors, what about a first rate Australian actor in the lead etc?
So two trailers have now been unveiled and both of them are amazing, if you ask me - especially the one that I think made its debut yesterday. At the very least, we seem to be in for some of the most stunning cinematography of recent years.

Completely agreed. This looks remarkable.

Where are the Aussies in this? Cultural vandalism!

With this, SPECTRE, another Damon/Greengrass Bourne outing and - incredibly - yet another performance (or so it is claimed) by Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa (in the ROCKY series spinoff flick CREED), my franchise dreams are coming true!
Unless these trailers are stupendously deceiving, I suspect that I'll come to regard FURY ROAD as either the best of the Max outings or the best one after the original, which I find to be every bit as underrated as MAD MAX 2/THE ROAD WARRIOR is overrated. Revisiting the series on Blu-ray recently I felt that the first one really does hold up astonishingly well. The other two certainly have their moments, but also their flaws, and neither quite floors me these days.

We're living in a strange time. One "impossible" sequel after another is coming to pass (a trend perhaps best epitomized by the new Star Wars; whatever you may think of that film, I never seriously entertained the idea that another Star Wars film with Ford, Hamill, and Fischer would ever come to pass).

Agreed.
The trailer really is spectacular. High-octane action done right.
The only thing that gives me a bit of hope is Hardy, who is genuinely a good actor. Not sure if this is the kind of movie where he can showcase his craft.
Much of it looks too CGI-ed for my liking.
Part of the appeal of the original series was the raw, lived in look of the universe.
FWIW, this has screened and received rave reactions.
I'll see it at some point, I'm sure, but I've been detached from the mainstream for a long time now.
With the never-ending onslaught of franchise fare--not even interesting franchise fare, but just formulaic rot--it's hard to get excited about anything these days. The remaining great filmmakers are either on their last leg or are working almost wholly in the arthouse ghetto (Godard's Goodbye to Language may or may not be one of the greatest films ever made, but who cares to wrestle with it beyond the most committed cinema savants?).
But Fury Road appeals to me, nonetheless. Miller has always been an exceedingly idiosyncratic filmmaker, and the word on the street is that his sensibility wasn't watered down in his battles with the studio over Fury Road.

The action is indeed terrific (as expected) but what's taken me very much by surprise is the sheer beauty of the cinematography. There are some truly gorgeous shots here - I particularly like the one of vehicles flipping over at night (at about 1:06 in the new trailer).
