I haven't seen Argo and can't say I really have much urge to see it.
Partly because of the blatant revisionist history inherent in the narrative. The whole affair was a Canadian operation. All of us here in the Great White North know that the Canadian ambassador, Ken Taylor, was the hero of the thing.
Jimmy Carter and others have confirmed as much in the wake of the film's release. I remember the news coverage from back in the day. Ken Taylor was fetted by all and sundry. It wasn't a secret.
Affleck to his credit at least is acknowledging reality after the fact and will have lengthy features on Ken Taylor and the real story in the blu-ray extras. Affleck took the basic story but revised it to be an American led operation.
We Canuckies saved your American asses back then. You're welcome!
But such is the nature of Hollywood historical filmmaking. Don't let the facts get in the way of opportunistic storytelling. Movies must first and foremost entertain I guess, so if you want historical integrity, read-up with historians that you actually trust.
In the case of Argo though, 33 years isn't long enough for the real story to have been lost to posterity. Affleck did at least rush out a thank-you to Canada in his acceptance speech.
