American Sniper just busted the January BO records with an opening weekend more familiar with hit summer movies.
And that's even with pirated screener dvds on the loose...they always put Oscar worthy movies on screener dvds and they always get leaked
So 2015 is off with a bang.
Idris Elba for the sequel.

In forty years from Josey Wales to American Sniper. Where did it all go wrong, Clint?

SPECTRE should reach the billion mark…
50 Shades will probably get close to it, too, unfortunately.

I think Star Wars opens Dec 18...I'm wondering if it can really do $300m+ in 2 weeks? I'm thinking it might still be behind Bond on Dec 31 although it might subsequently overtake it in early 2016.
Bond will have a free run for a month or so before that in the USA, and 6 weeks in the UK.

MI5 has been cleverly moved from Dec 2015 (to avoid Star Wars) to July 2015.
Which means Ethan Hunt comes out well before Bond, just as Ghost Protocol did in the same year as Skyfall.
Rumour has it the stunts are bloody awesome....that's really Tom Cruise hanging on a plane 5000 ft in the air.
Definitely $200m+ in the USA. Tom Cruise may be tabloid fodder but his MI movies are good and keep the bar up for Bond.

Then there's THE MAN FROM UNCLE, adding to the list of spy films this year.

JURASSIC WORLD ought to rake it in. Love the recent trailer.

STAR WARS and AVENGERS will probably lead the pack, with JURASSIC WORLD close behind.

Star Wars opens mid December...I doubt it can do $600m in 2 weeks but then anything's possible...I know I'll see it at least 3 times.
Avengers Age of Ultron will lead the pack. A spoiler for Avengers was printed in an ad in a recent Star Wars variant comic and it had to be pulled and destroyed...but the copies that survived are now selling for $200 up. And the spoiler isn't a big deal in my opinion.
Spoiler:
The grey version of Hulk might be used...yep, he's not always green in Marvel anymore as there are grey hulks, red hulks, and a she-hulk who's also an attorney.

So, are we predicting what film released in the year 2015 will make, or is it much stricter to what films will make only within that year? AVATAR is always credited as the highest grossing film of 2009, but it made most of its money in the following year.

After nearly 3000 entries in a few days, The Guardian has closed the comments on its 'The real American Sniper was a hate-filled killer' article. I don't know anything about Chris Kyle, but my sympathies are with the commentator who wrote, "What's the point in being "liberal" or of the left, if all that distinguishes us from the right is the target for our vitriol?"

Whoops, I wasn't aware of that. AVENGERS will definitely take top spot then. Wasn't STAR WARS initially slated for a summer/late summer release? I clearly haven't kept up with it very faithfully.

I don't think it was ever officially slated for a Summer release, but that was the assumption because the previous films were all May releases. There was no way Disney was gonna have two of its biggest properties competing against each other, so December became the most obvious choice.
Plus, the whole idea of Summer being a "blockbuster season" for the US has already been fading for a long time, now that we have hit films in November/December that are making the kind of money one expects in the Summer.

I believe they were tentatively scheduled for Summer 2015, but things were delayed once Abrams and Larry Kasdan took over screenwriting duties. Supposedly, the executives at Disney wanted to keep the Summer 2015 release but JJ and Kathy Kennedy wanted to push back to Summer 2016, and they eventually settled on December 2015 (I'm sure the AVENGERS release played-into the decision, as well).
