Simple Minds was one of the greatest bands in the first half of the 80s. Saw them live twice in the middle of the decade. EMPIRES AND DANCE, SONS AND FASCINATION, NEW GOLD DREAM and SPARKLE IN THE RAIN are all brilliant. They took a dive with ONCE UPON A TIME that they never fully recovered from, but I do enjoy much of the one immediately after that, STREET FIGHTING YEARS.

Saw them live for the first time at an open-air gig last summer ... it was a very good night indeed, Jim's still in fine fettle. My only criticism would be that the show was around an hour and 40 minutes, and a full 2 hours (or longer) would've obviously allowed for more of their hits to be played.

This one could have made a great Bond theme song.

If they had quit after SPARKLE IN THE RAIN, they would be remembered as one of the greatest bands of all time.

Caught them live during this tour:
Everything from the new record was the weakest part of the show.
Here they were the backing band for Peter Gabriel, one of their heroes:

If somebody remade Dr. No thirty years ago, Gabriel might have made a good Julius.

You could be onto something there, Khanners ... there's an undeniably sinister air to Gabriel's Games Without Frontiers.

I know musicians have been known to dabble in it (Phil Collins and Sting are just 2 who spring to mind) but apart from his videos, I think Gabriel's mostly avoided it.

I love the original, but this is pretty neat.

And the opening track at their gig here last summer. They're touring again next year, arenas this time ... think I'll go, if I can get my mitts on a ticket OK.
