Why did he do it?

What do you think the writers were trying to convey by having Bond say that he had always hated his childhood home? Was this some symbolic rejection of something else?

Yep, Cregg-Bond is the ultimate emo.

Seems the only one who actually likes the place is Kincaid. M is disparaging when she first catches sight of it too, if memory serves.

1: It explains why we've never heard of the place before;
2: It explains why he found it so easy to blow the place up;
3: Why should he care? He didin't own it anymore anyway.

4: Because it reminds him of his childhood when he learned his parents were dead.

It was a pretty dreary looking place. Even Kincaid didn't seem all bothered getting it trashed when it came to fighting off goons.

I didn't know his kindly aunt lived in a derelict mansion or that he hated it..oh wait never mind that's Fleming...it's just a quickly dreamed up excuse to get them out of London and a half assed attempt to simultaneously to more "deconstruction of character" for a "character" who is a soulless automation and has none.

I think the house itself would have looked great in its heyday. What's dreary is the location. Talk about overdevelopment considering the location!

His aunt never did live there. At least, I don't remember them mentioning Charmian Bond in Skyfall. It was his childhood home. What they did in Skyfall regarding Bond's past is use what little background information they have and expand it using logical and creative decisions. The same can't be said about SPECTRE (or Casino Royale for that matter).

Thanks for the posts, you've all given me food for thought. It just seemed so bizarre to have him say that. Most people have some nostalgia for the old home place and that sort of house out in the country would have been heaven on Earth for most lads. Plenty of room to roam and explore, a gunroom, old Kincaid to teach him how to fish and hunt, a freaking priest hole with a tunnel under the moor!

I've been avoding that thread since I would find it hard to give a firm ranking of all the films. I could easliy say which were my favourites and which are worst, imo, but a complete ranking would take some heavy thinking-which makes my head hurt.

Fair call. Even if you want to list your favourites and least favourites and do a 'the rest are interchangeable' tag, which many have done!
