One of the best crime thriller series in recent years, it features an excellent performance from Sarah Lancashire as troubled Yorkshire policewoman Sgt. Cawood who has her hands full enough as it is dealing with druggies, yobs, headcases and other assorted riff-raff, but when the toerag who allegedly raped her late daughter is released from prison, she becomes very suspicious of him and soon enough, he plays a big part in the abduction of a millionaire businessman's spoilt daughter for ransom. Some disturbingly violent moments such as the death of Catherine's young colleague in series 1 but it's a compelling watch with some standout moments and a fair bit of comedy to ease the mind off the more harrowing stuff.
