Brett Ratner takes producing role at the Oscars...

LOS ANGELES — If those who give the Oscars are looking for laughs, action and the occasional outrage from their annual awards show, they are on the right track. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences on Thursday said Brett Ratner, a filmmaker known for directing the raucous “Rush Hour” series and for producing “Horrible Bosses,” will join Don Mischer in producing the next Oscar show, which is set to air Feb. 26 on ABC. Last year’s broadcast, produced by Mr. Mischer and Bruce Cohen, had soft ratings and was widely criticized for a lackluster performance by one of its hosts, James Franco. If energy is the issue, Mr. Ratner should be able to provide a fix. He is known as a film aficionado and an ambitious filmmaker whose is currently making a Snow White project for Relativity Media, and has dozens of projects in development. Recently, Mr. Ratner directed “Tower Heist.” That action picture, due Nov. 4 from Universal Pictures, has uncertain Oscar prospects, but counts Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, Matthew Broderick and Gabourey Sidibe among its stars.

I saw a scene from "Tower Heist" being filmed at Columbus Circle last Fall. I recorded about 30 seconds of the production before getting bored with what I was seeing.

Oh, lovely.

But can it really get any worse than the last Oscars?

Honestly, they just need to make Billy Crystal do it again and most everything will be fine.

Nah. Even Bart Rattner, one of the worst directors working today, could bring a new light to this awards show.

I so want to see Jackie Chan host the Oscars now.
