Scary stuff. Apparently our UK government's already on the same track.

"The Coalition Government which was elected May 2010 has stated that it wants to “accelerate significantly the rollout of smart meters compared to previously published targets”. There is some scepticism as to whether an accelerated approach is wise and whether it might risk undermining the benefits identified. DECC’s own Impact Assessment concludes that “There is potential for greater risk to consumers in terms of cost” from an accelerated rollout."
