Downey Jr and Mel Gibson both class acts

After having read this article, I have new respect for both Robert Downey Jr and Mel Gibson. They are both big stars who have battled demons, supported each other and survived. Long ago Gibson pulled up Downey and now Downey is offering Mel a hand back. Good guys.

Gibson needs Downey, because at Downey's worst he was only a drug addict. He never committed the cardinal sin of making a movie that offended Jews, or used derogatory language to talk about Jewish or black people. You can come back from a lot of things in Hollywood, but it's really tough to talk out against the Jews and expect the industry to welcome you back. You can attack Christians...white males...Southerners....conservatives (it's almost a requirement)....successful business men and women....but you can't say anything negative about Jewish people and expect to remain relevant in the business.

Mel Gibsons antics left me with a dirty taste in my mouth, while it is a free world too say what you want I feel free to find him an offensive loudmouth bastard.

Downey Jr. was his own worst enemy and has even since remained a certain style/grace about it all. I am just glad he is back on form and cinema. He remains one of those actors that make you go to a movie even if you are not quite sure that it is your taste.

Nowadays though the worst thing Hollywood can brand you with is "homophobic". That is the big bad. Downey probably said some crazy things in his drunken rambling days too, but they didn't get reported.

I think that is terribly unfair to Mel. But you are welcome to your opinion of course. Downey wouldn't agree with you, nor would others that I'm sure Mel has helped.

How is that "terribly unfair to Mel"? I'm for free speech as much as the next person, but I have to admit that telling the mother of your child "I hope you're raped by a pack of f------ n------" is kind of hard to walk back or put in context. I can live with calling a female cop "Sugar tits" (because it's kind of funny), but all the rest of it is on Gibson. He said it. He did it. He profusely apologized after being pulled over by the cop back in 2006 and started doing all the things you'd expect someone to do who was trying to repair his reputation with the Jewish community, and then the whole incident with his girlfriend came out a few years later and what was there left to say? I think wishing for his girlfriend to get raped by a pack of savage black guys speaks for itself.

Actions I think speak much louder than words. People say a lot of crap, not only when sloshed, but also when simply just angry, emotional or caught in the moment, but actions speak a lot louder. That said, I think Mel is smart enough to realize, many will write him off based on his outbursts. That goes with the territory, so maybe not so unfair. Price of celebrity.

His private life aside (and it's really none of my business), I respect Gibson for not sucking up to the official Hollywood line and for still managing to both act and direct interesting films like Apocalypto and Passion of the Christ.

De Niro walked out on the Edge of Darkness movie, and it was heavily rumored it was because he did not want to work with Gibson.

Edge of Darkness was a good film and directed by a Bond director no less.

However I refuse to watch Mel's latest - the one about the beaver. No thanks.

He did.

I remain appreciative of the talents and entertainment the likes of RDJ and MelG bring and I am not really interested in their private life or views. When it comes to identifying 'class acts' however I am more appreciative of the larger majority of Hollywood that somehow manages discretion, exhibits self control and doesn't back themselves into a corner where they need to apologise or try and change their nature in order to make amends.

I was never a Mel fan, so it means nothing to me one way or the other.

Devious bastards these Jews. Just waiting till their enemies strangle themselves. How reptilian of them, such cowards. The least they could do is smile and take the insults like good sports, no?

You're speaking in cliches and stereotypes J7. So what if the Jewish religious leaders of the time rejected Jesus' claims to divinity. Some Jews did and some didn't. It doesn't matter in the slightest. This is how you would expect it to be anyway, and the same divisions have existed with gentiles throughout history. The Judas sellout of Jesus reflects on Judas, and no-one else. All the early Christians were Jews anyway.

As for Mel he suffers from paranoid delusions, probably because he drinks too much, but at least he makes an effort to help his fellow man, even if he is kinda nuts.
