La tourneuse de pages (2006, dir. Denis Dercourt)

Apart from a few aspects of the story that aren't perfectly convincing, this is a fine and subtle psychological thriller. Catherine Frot is pretty good.

Marathon Man (1976, dir.John Schlesinger)

Pretty decent thriller. Must've watched this when I was very small, at a time when I didn't understand anything. Only thing I really remembered was the clove oil application, and maybe the hotel room fight. I'm glad Olivier isn't hammy. (I once knew a guy whose name was "Christian Sell" laugh ).

Un flic (1972, dir. Jean-Pierre Melville)

Decent Melville, must've inspired De Palma for MI. Cute miniature work (not 100% convincing).

You could say the same of ALIENS, yet that's why everyone praises its brilliance -- because it was different and took the franchise to the next logical step rather than rehashing the original. That's what I liked about T4 -- that it wasn't just another "Skynet sends robot back to kill Connor, Connor sends robot back to defend himself -- surprise surprise Connor lives" story. That's also why Sarah Connor Chronicles was boring as fuck. It's essentially T2: The Television Series -- any TV series with a built-in, pre-supposed ending is worthless, See: Smallville, where they jumped through a million hoops keeping Clark from becoming Superman for ten years.

it does and it doesn't

the bare bones of the structure is still built around people being knocked off by the alien one by one, except amped up, so now there are more aliens and the people are better armed
and the set and costume design are still true to the original, whereas in T4 it's so different that it causes a disconnect for me

Thoroughly Modern Millie (1967)

Found this randomly on youtube and gave it a look. Starts weirdly quirky but then runs out of steam. Also on the one hand you have a tasty young-ish Julie Andrews. On the other hand you have this, one of the scariest things ever recorded to film:

Glad I'm not alone on that one.

Carol Channing, however, is some abomination from the seventh circle of hell.

SINISTER (2012, dir. Scott Derrickson)

It's legitimately scary, which you can't say for most contemporary horror films.

THEY LIVE (1988, dir. John Carpenter)

Love it.

Really? Might actually go see it then. Thought it was going to be another over-hyped POS like INSIDIOUS.

Got some free tickets at the local cinema. Will probably use them for TAKEN 2 and that.

Well, SINISTER is also kinda bleak and nasty (reminds me of Fincher, of whom Derrickson is a mighty big fan, so might not be your cup of tea). I can't say I particularly enjoyed the experience, or that I'd watch it again, but SINISTER did manage to get under my skin in a way few horror films have.

The Split
Jim Brown leads an impressive cast in this solid heist / action movie
Gene Hackman, Donald Suhterland, Ernest Borgnine, Jack Klugman, James Whitmore...
Big Jim was more than just a blax star in the first part of his career

Paranormal Activity 2 & 3 last night on cable...

Some genuinely spooky moments, but Part 3 was ruined by the witches.

It's fun watching this shit at 2am with no lights on.

Also finally caught Source Code....passable....

Ever seen Fuest's LAST DAYS OF MAN ON EARTH? It is a train wreck, but at least it is over quickly. And the art direction is really something, as is the female lead.

Watched the newer CONAN THE BARBARIAN last night on streaming. Was really surprised that the first part was pretty entertaining, and thought the kid playing young Conan was either pretty awesome as an actor or a genuine psycho. Fell asleep on the last half hour though.

Pit and the Pendulum (1961)

Jolly good fun. I liked the lighting here better than HOUSE OF USHER. Thought that one looked overlit.

The Hudsucker Proxy

Enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I was going to. Loved its simplicity, straight-forwardness and, of all things, its sweetness. All the characters are a joy to watch.

Coen-o-meter

1) The Big Lebowski
2) Miller`s Crossing
3) Burn After Reading
4) Fargo
5) The Hudsucker Proxy
6) True Grit
7) No Country For Old Men
8) Raising Arizona
9) A Serious Man

I`ve enjoyed all of them except A Serious Man, which I couldn`t finish.

It's not for everybody, but in my case with the Coens, I love THE MAN WHO WASN'T THERE as much as MILLER'S CROSSING.

Dracula (1958)

Satisfying. Love the look and the cast.

I'm watching a lot of old horror movies that I've not seen before Halloween. I'll watch the Lugosi one later. Should have watched it first, but oh well.

I thought Jim Brown carried that film very nicely. But I found the film a bit uneven. I recall liking the last half more.

Sherlock Holmes - Game Of Shadows
I enjoyed it even more than the first one, maybe because I'd had more wine?
or perhaps because, having seen the first one, I didn't bring any preconceptions and was better able to accept it on it's own merits, with all it's Guy Ritchie-isms and Victorian Tony Stark-isms
Sherlock II strikes a blow or two for old school male chauvinism, as the previous movies precocious female gets her come-upance from Moriaty, while Watson's new wife is quickly thrown from the train and out of the main story by Holmes

Yeah, I prefer PIT AND THE PENDULUM to USHER. USHER feels a bit stagnant to me.

You should check out this essay on the Corman Poe films and the recurring motifs and themes within.
