- It is one of the most famous lines in cinema history, but the legendary introduction, 'Bond... James Bond', might never have existed.
An early draft from 1952 of Ian Fleming's first Bond book, Casino Royale, reveals the author had originally intended his hero to call himself James Secretan when on undercover operations...
'Ian's first idea was to give James Bond an assumed name as his cover,' revealed his niece Kate Grimond, whose family owns the draft. From what I gather, Secretan would have been an alias like Somerset, or whatever Bond uses while on assignment. Fleming, instead, had Bond use his real name. The article's title is a little misleading. |

| I think Fleming was concerned about what kind of picture his hero would give if he were to 'lie' to an ally such as CIA agent Felix Leiter. He knew field agents were not supposed to be known by all and sundry, especially not members of foreign services. But he had to explain the connection between Bond and Mathis, an old friend, and Bond and Leiter, a new acquaintance whose help became crucial in finally beating LeChiffre. It may not be very realistic of Bond to use his real name with almost everybody, but for the story it surely helps giving the impression of genuine friendship, particularly between Bond and Felix. Though Felix knowing Bond's code number (in TB) indeed goes too far. |
