But I think it almost takes an adult to appreciate TLD, and I've certainly felt in our "post 9/11 world" that the film is much more accessible and topical than before. And, it's not like there were never parts I didn't like...I always liked Kara and Brad Whitaker and Necros and Dalton's constantly smarmy, annoyed, 'I'm-smarter-than-all-of-the-rest-of-you' look. I think TLD represents the complete package for a Bond film; it has a romance you can believe, credible action sequences, and a fairly complicated, twisting plot.
Agreed. TLD is like a combination of FRWL intrigue/plot with OP-era action sequences. - Gravity's Silhouette wrote:

TB's my #1. It is refreshing to see someone put DAD as high as #5. It's my favorite Brosnan Bond film and ranks around #15 for me. Make sure to list your full rankings in this thread at your convenience- https://bondandbeyond.forumotion.com/t33p45-rank-all-the-bond-films

Same here, and it's interesting to see the film being linked through that top five to a couple of the later Moore films, because for me what separates Die Another Day from the three even bigger crapfests which preceded it is an occasional sense of a more mature and male James Bond, a world-weary agent for whom age is no longer on his side. There's also a far greater sense of balance to Brosnan's performance, not too dissimilar to the effortless charm yet somewhat more weary and serious Moore of FYEO, OP & AVTAK. Brosnan came as close as he was ever gonna get to nailing Bond with DAD, and the lack of smugness in his performance (not too dissimilar to Moore finally leaving behind the smugness of films like LALD & TSWLM) puts me on Bond's side in that film, as opposed to me simply looking on incredulously as Bond is constantly pussified, as was the case in films like GE and TWINE. Also like late-era Moore, Brosnan now finds his enemies to be younger than him in DAD which makes Bond seem welcomely a bit more old school and mature as a result. i could never put DAD anywhere near as high as number 5 personally, but I do think it's the best Brosnan film mostly due to the leading man finally setlling in and going from idiotic lovestruck dufus in the previous film to simply a solid and confident Bond in DAD. It's the one Brosnan film which occasionally feels like a Cubby Bond film; Bond smokes, shags, hooks up with old-school foreign allies, doesn't put up with M's psychological blarney and struts his stuff to the strains of Arnold's most confident Bond score, one in which he finally embraces the very few things he's good at, notably just covering up his lack of any melodies of real length or depth by dressing his cues up with some tricksy techno urgency and confidence. |

TLD is a very watchable Bond film, despite Dalt's emotional histrionics. And Bond's falling head over heals for Kara is among my favourite screen puppy loves of all time. It makes me cry, especially the ferris wheel scene :( ;) Watched DAD again the other day. I actually love this film. It's now hands now the best of the Brozzers , at least for its sheer fun entertainment value. I am not going to put it ahead of any of the first 14 films but its pushing the Dalts duo for status in the post Moore, bottom 8. |

| Hello all, this is Kennon.
I take it it's customary for rookies to introduce themselves? Well, that's me. Bond fan since 1979, have read all the Flemings, Gardners, Bensons. Capitulated with DMC after a third of the way. Endured Carte Blanche. Found Pearson very entertaining and Amis close enough. No idea about Moneypenny or Young Bond as yet.
Films are a difficult thing for me. I can enjoy most of them but hardly ever really think they live up to the books. That's why I think the best Bond film is yet to come, in a far distant future in another galaxy or so.
Anyway, here I am. Nice to meet you. |

I completely agree to an extent in that I tend to look at the two things in different lights - I enjoy them for different reasons ... ... mind you that is talking films vs books debate in general. I am yet to read all the Bond novels (its on my Bucket List) |

Well, now, that's not true, is it, Fae? In a Bond film you know he's going to be tall, dark, handsome, a FFF-er, and have plenty of decent one-liners. Ah. I see what you mean. :| |

| Thanks for the welcome.
Indeed, films and books have to be regarded as two different things, and judged for their own merits. Films for the most part are big business today. The object of that business is pretty much secondary to the revenue. If it wasn't Bond that brought the cash it would be some other character. That's why some of the films can at times feel awfully superficial; it's often about the elements that sell, the action, shootouts, clean sex and glitzy sets and locales. All that tacked onto Bond with little regard for the story and the character himself. But it's debatable if the original of the books would be selling as many tickets as the movie version. |

And the Mad Dog you're thinking of is Mad Dog Vachon. Do a Google image search and you'll be rewarded. Vachon used to scare the crap out of me when I was a little spark back in the seventies. |

| Hello, all. I am responding to an invitation from The Shark to join the fun over here at B&B (so if you don't like me, blame him).
So what about me? I've been a Bond fan since seeing Diamonds are Forever at the tender age of 12. I've seen 'em all and read 'em all - repeatedly - but my tastes remain influenced by that early exposure to the Mankiewicz/Hamilton style. Since Sean's day was already over by the time I came aboard, I happily accepted Roger Moore as 007.
All of my top favorite films appeared between 1965 and 1977, although I appreciate all the rest for their individual merits. The only one that disappointed me was AVTAK, but I won't criticize anyone who liked it best if they'll lay off me for loving DAF and DAD.
Literarily speaking, Fleming comes first - of course - and I looked forward to each new Gardner entry with great anticipation. I greatly admired Raymond Benson's first and third novels, but can take or leave the rest.
I am not a great collector of memorabilia, apart from the books (several sets of editions), the soundracks (vinyl and CD,) posters and of course the films (VHS and UE DVD). I also have the set of 1:18 scale cars, but the crown jewel of my modest collection is my Golden Gun replica, which I'd lusted after for 35 years.
I have my preferences and my dislikes, but I don't consider my opinions to be any more valid than anyone else's, so I won't be calling anyone else here an idiot for disagreeing with me. I do, however, have an encyclopaedic memory for trivia, and may correct others when they get their details confused (Steve Coogan as Alan Partridge: "Stop getting Bond wrong!" - that's me).
I'm also a stickler for correct spelling, grammar and punctuation (and was long before I became a teacher) and can spot a teenage fanboy trying to masquerade as an adult from a distance of one post, so if you want to get into a battle of wits with me be sure to bring a friend (such as Spellcheck).
That's all for now. I look forward to joining some lively discussions and respectful debates.
Keep the Brirish end up!
P.S.: How do I insert an avatar?

I think DIE ANOTHER DAY has suffered from massively induced, acute short term memory loss. People seem to have forgotten that it was a very popular film as the time and quite successful. While it pushed the edges at times for me, and there were some things I'd definitely have done differently, it was still a massively entertaining film, with a great villain, great villainess, pretty good leading lady, and some bizarro action set pieces. - Quote :
