I never left...

You always have the perfect answer Bond style and that is still one of my favorite scenes in the series.

Yes. It may be the classiest single moment in all of the Craig films. One key reason I cannot hate QoS, although I certainly recognize its faults.

It's a moment that supports something Babs said in an interview at the time about Bond's incorruptibility being one of the key aspects of his character.

Must have been quiet day in the office for M to personally attend Yusef's arrest.

A surprisingly lucid statement from her. A pity she doesn't share Bond's incorruptibility regarding the series as a whole.

Yep ... she said he can't be bought, his to-country loyalty is absolute (confirmed in the dialogue in Skyfall too, of course).

Live and Let Die

Second last Bond movie for the year (last will be OHMSS at Christmas) to celebrate Halloween. I enjoyed this more this time round then I have in the past. I still believe the music is the film's biggest strength but I'm appreciating the cinematography and characters more than I have in the past. Kotto does an excellent job as Kananga/Big, in fact he's very compelling when he's given the material to work with. His plan is just too underwhelming to make him standout amongst the pantheon of great main villains in the series.

Good choice for the season, guess the voodoo elements make LALD the nearest the franchise has come to horror (although I have read that the Bond newspaper comic-strip of old had more of that sort of thing).

I'm watching SP tonight, and it his strong horror elements. The same could be said for DAF, although it's more gallows humor than true horror, I suppose.

LALD praise...it's going to be a beautiful day!

The final shot of the Baron on the front of the traincar is at once beautiful, iconic, endearing and the only moment of any in the entire series to suggest the element of the supernatural.

Thought you'd appreciate that, HGTB.

I also quite liked the fight with Teehee on the train, and realised its the gimmicky send off to the henchman that leaves a sour taste.

Also, is it just me or is that smooth scission Teehee performs on the sack so very satisfying?

I am having an easier time getting newbies into Bond if I start with the Brosnan ones.

CASINO ROYALE

Been a while since i've seen this one. What works for me:

Locations, locations, locations. Excellent use of putting Bond and the location in the mix together. Gorgeous scenery, sets. Breathtaking views in Italy, The Bahamas.

Action: fewer set pieces than most of the other films, but when it's onscreen it's intense. The free-running sequence up and onto the cranes are both the highlight of the film and probably Top 10 for the series.

Musical score was good. Photography was beautiful; lots of vibrant colors. Quite at odds with what would come later.

Craig is good in some scenes, very good in others. But he's definitely got a face that benefits from holding back and using soft focus. One or two of his close-ups were a bit unflattering.

Eva Green is good, but there were a few times where I thought the acting was a bit camp and I never totally was sold that Bond would give it all up for her.

Rather bland villains. I see nothing in Mads Mikkelsen's performance to recommend him. Easily could have been played by a much more dynamic actor and I think the film would've benefited from having a well-known actor take on the role.

I watched OHMSS as part of my Christmas-viewing ritual. Now I've always felt OHMSS is one of the most visually satisfying Bond films but I think it's just outranked them all. Excellently framed, exciting in its action shots, gorgeous in its landscapes, sumptuous in capturing the girls. So many iconic shots, which I'll add to in the Favourite Frames thread in time.

One of the perfect Bond films ever made. Might have even bumped TB out of fourth spot.

While my rankings tend to change that one is still my number one and agree with every word you wrote. After the escape, the chase...he looks so disoriented, tired, scared and the camera makes us feel that...then suddenly the skates, Tracy! feels like an angel just showed up.. one of the best moments in any film

Tracy showing up as she does is one of my favourite Bond moments and again, taken very well from the book. Bond's expression as he makes his way to the rink, the fear in his eyes and sitting there all but losing hope he'll get out alive.

Outside of the train punch-up with Hinx, this is clearly the most fear Bond ever showed in a film. And both sequences were tremendously effective. There's nothing wrong with Bond being a touch vulnerable and showing the natural human reaction to it.

Indeed, my favourite part of the film. I'll have to check out the Three Favourite scenes thread to make sure I've listed it.

Hmm, not sure I recall Bond's vulnerability in SP's train fight but I also have avoided watching it for some time. As always, after much discussion on BAB with some members regarding Spectre and Casino Royale as solid entries, I get the foolish idea to pop in those films again and see if I'm completely bonkers for not enjoying them. With NTTD getting released, I might give them a watch again in the new year (though I know it will most likely turn me off Bond films for some time as is always the case) but I'll be sure to check if I see what you see in that train scene.

There's fear in Bond's eyes alright. And he actively flees from Hinx when he realizes he's totally unable to inflict harm upon him. IMO, Hinx is what Fleming intended Oddjob to be.

Watched SF Friday night. And, as always, I'm struck by Berenice Marlohe's magnificence. Frame-for-frame, she's the greatest Bond girl of them all. Too bad she didn't get as much screen time as Diana Rigg and Isabella Scorupco.

She's by far the best Bond girl of the 21st century. Sexy, tragic, enigmatic, wonderfully written and deftly performed. She'd be in my top 10 best Bond girls for sure.

If I had no conception of James Bond and the 00 program as written by Fleming then perhaps as his emotional arc would be easier to digest. But it still looks and sounds like a generic actioner, retains feminist undertones and the love story unfolds in a schizophrenic fashion, so it wouldn't be a film I'd go back to anyway.
