Gabriel's Scratch My Back is basically an orchestral cover album. A bit hit and miss and but an interesting experiment. He seems to have renounced the playfulness and swagger of his earlier records, which is a shame. Guess that's what old age does.
The last tune that reminded me of classic Gabriel was Burn You Up, Burn You Down from Hit (2003). Chorus reminds me vaguely of Prince in his New Power Generation period.
Hit's reworking of I Have the Touch from Security remains my favourite arrangment of the song.

That's not too bad. Didn't know you were an Icehouse fan, Ambler.
I do like 'No Promises', it's one of my favourite 80s tracks and would make one of my 'best of 80s' home-made cds.

Wrong thread, but we don't have a "Worst cover version" topic that I'm aware of, and I just wanted to share this video.
99% of the covers I hear are usually no better or no worse than the original. .5% manage to bring something new to the table like Radiohead covering NOBODY DOES IT BETTER, U2 covering UNCHAINED MELODY, HIM (WICKED GAME), Seether (CARELESS WHISPER), Stone Temple Pilots (Revolution), Neon Trees (Don't You Want Me?), Red Hot Chilli Peppers (Higher Ground).
Then there's this monstrosity that aired on THE VOICE:

Had they ever even heard the original? Nothing that comes out of their math comes close to the tone, the angst, the seriousness of The Verve's original Bittersweet Symphony. This group oversings it, tries to add some sexy playfullness and in the end it is one of the worst covers I've ever heard. It was murdered, I tell you, MUR-DIDDLY-UR-DUR-URD!!!!!
