Thank you. Could you, or someone else familiar with the industry and its terms, follow up on your point? I thought that main cast = first unit, and that second unit = stunt drivers or any other photography of any type that didn't need or involve closeups of the main cast.

It is a shot of a bar. But again, chances are shots of Mendes probably would have shown up *if* he was there. Even if they didn't "interview" him, you'd likely see him doing something. The most likely explanation is he was never there. And if Mendes wasn't there, the first unit wasn't there.

The first unit is the director, director of photography, etc (in this case Sam Mendes and Roger Deakins). Normally, actors don't work with the second unit (second unit or action director, etc). However, on occasion, a Bond lead actor does some work with the second unit. In The Living Daylights, Timothy Dalton was sent so Arthur Wooster, the second unit director of that movie, could get some insert shots. However, Dalton ended up doing more. The "Inside The Living Daylights" featurette on the DVD mentions an example or two of this.

Put antoher way, your understanding pretty much matches mine. But there are exceptions when a lead actor works with the second unit. (And still other cases where the first and second units work together at the same location. -- that's not the case here, apparently, just mentioning it)

It appears he and Ola Rapace were there. Maybe, that was so the car sequence (whether it's a chase or just cars following one another) didn't look fake.But recall, they were also using Ascot to double for the Shanghai airport. So scenes there won't really be in Shanghai.

Yup, an example of insert shots is the revealing close up of Dalton as a fellow agent falls to his death. Unfortunately in that film's case he blatantly looks like he's in a studio soundstage instead of a real location due to poor lighting, it doesn't blend well at all with the location footage.

China looks like the most Interesting locale of Skyfall so far. I don't believe Craig actually went there though. It's cinema magic! If he did go, then surely the media or followers would've reported it.

You would be surprised how many events go on in China without the general population knowing about it. SKYFALL is getting massive coverage in Turkey, and the people are all very excited and proud to have Bond shooting there. But it would not surprise me if the people of Shanghai were totally oblivious to Bond's presence there. With so much secrecy surrounding the SKYFALL shoot, it wouldn't be difficult for Craig to slip in and out of China with no-one noticing. After all, he somehow managed to keep his wedding a secret until after the fact. And he reportedly went to visit Rachel Weisz on the set of THE BOURNE LEGACY in Manila while shooting was taking place in Shanghai. Officially, he never went anywhere near China ...

According to Alexander Witt, the airport escalator is real though.

"We're here in Shanghai, and the scene we're shooting is the arrival of Patrice and Bond. And they go from the airport to where all the high-risers are."

Indeed the static and publicity shots haven't been doing it for me, but this glimpse is a lot more encouraging, quite a bit of character sugested by these locations already.

I liked a shot I saw of Craig at a bar.
