- IMAX Corporation, Albert R. Broccoli's EON Productions, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Studios, and Sony Pictures Entertainment today announced that the long-awaited next chapter in the famed James Bond franchise, SKYFALL, will be released in IMAX® theatres simultaneously with the film's international release on Oct. 26, and its domestic release on Nov. 9, 2012. This is the first IMAX installment of the iconic Bond film franchise.
In SKYFALL, Bond's loyalty to M is tested as her past comes back to haunt her. As MI6 comes under attack, 007 must track down and destroy the threat, no matter how personal the cost.
SKYFALL marks the return of Daniel Craig as Ian Fleming's James Bond 007, as well as Judi Dench reprising her role as M. The film also stars franchise newcomers Ralph Fiennes, Javier Bardem and Naomie Harris. The film is directed by Sam Mendes from a screenplay written by Neal Purvis & Robert Wade and John Logan. Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli are producers.
"SKYFALL will be the cool, must-see event release of the fall, and releasing the film in IMAX only reinforces that," said Rory Bruer, President, Worldwide Distribution for Sony Pictures Worldwide Marketing and Distribution.
"It is fitting that with SKYFALL marking the 50th Anniversary of the James Bond franchise, we celebrate in epic style and what could be more larger-than-life than IMAX joining the festivities," said Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum, Co-Chairman and Chief Executive Officers of MGM.
"It is an honor and a privilege to be a part of this legendary franchise, whose iconic characters and electrifying action will only be amplified in the IMAX format," said Greg Foster, Chairman and President, IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "We are excited to rejoin forces with our friends at Sony Pictures Entertainment and MGM and so pleased to work with Michael G. Wilson, Barbara Broccoli, and Sam Mendes to bring their vision to IMAX and Bond fans around the world."
The IMAX release of SKYFALL will be digitally re-mastered into the image and sound quality of The IMAX Experience® with proprietary IMAX DMR® (Digital Re-mastering) technology. The crystal-clear images coupled with IMAX's customized theatre geometry and powerful digital audio create a unique environment that will make audiences feel as if they are in the movie. http://www.imax.com/extras/news/albert-r-broccolis-eon-productions-metro-goldwyn-mayer-studios-and-sony-pictures-entertainment-to-release-the-james-bond-film-skyfall-in-imax-theatres/ |

It certainly got me back in the game, so to speak. Now I"m excited. Hopefully we'll get some over good news and some pix or footage that will give us a clue as to what this film is going to be like. |

| Awesome, I suppose. I'd be more intrigued if it was shot in IMAX, but I'm a sucker so I'll probably see it in IMAX anyway. |

Same here. An IMAX shot Bond film lensed by Deakins? That would be something, so this is the closest to that ever becoming a reality. I'm in for sure. |

| Hopefully there will be plenty of IMAX-worthy footage in the film (ie. not necessarily just action sequences, but breathtaking cinematography and feasts for the eyes). |

Won't fit a 70mm film cell. |

| I don't get seeing a pic blown up to a larger format at all. Seeing SILVERADO in 70mm was probably 4 times worse than seeing it in 35mm, and the 70mm print of ST VI (from Super35, so you were a generation removed even before the 70mm blowup) was maybe the most messed-up first day print I've ever seen, I even called the associate producer about it afterward, saying there was nothing but grain in the Kirk McCoy rure penthe bunkbed scene, no faces, nothing. (I deliberately chose the theater supposedly playing the 35mm version, but they got them screwed up and had the 70mm in that cinema (one of those old Century dome theaters where they split the old TODD-AO dome in half to make two cinemas.)
Shooting in a bigger format than you release in, yeah, something comes out of that when you go down. But the other direction, not for me.
Plus IMAX digital is apparently nothing quite like IMAX 70mm film, so you're losing even there as well. |

| So we get to see the craggiest-faced Bond taking orders and a pile of blag "emotional" sh**e from a 90-year old woman for two hours in huge IMAX. Makes sense, let's heighten those wrinkles as much as possible. Shit, I forgot it's all 'bout 'splosions, innit? Actually, it's about both. TWINE2IMAX: NOV2012. I'm there.
But yeah, I'd have been surprised had this film not went with a novelty, and I've half been expecting an announcement of some sort ever since the film started shooting, so I'll at least just be grateful they went for IMAX over 3D.

I don't blame you. My own particular "I" would MAX at seeing that. And trust good old Charlie Gray to have a readymade tagline for the Dog Bond's Arse IMAX Experience: "We're seeing a bit more cheek than usual, aren't we?" :*e*: |

| Yeah this film is gonna be the worst thing ever. Set your expectations low, do not take a neutral stand, the series will flop with this one for good. |

if it's just IMAX, why should we pay $16 to see it in IMAX!
I don't want to see Daniel's Mad Magazine guy ears in IMAX size!! |

| I can see some woman in the audience at the SKYFALL IMAX showing asking the person sitting next to her:
"when did Bond started carrying a long barrel Walther PPK?"
and the person next to her replying:
"that's not the barrel on his gun, it's something else"
:affraid: |

I don't think Casino Royale was released anywhere in IMAX. If it was, I don't think it was sanctioned by IMAX. |

| Casino Royale was shown on the IMAX screen but was just the normal film shown on a bigger screen, not in true IMAX. They did the same thing a couple of years ago when the National Film Theatre had a Bond season. They showed Dr No, Goldfinger, On Her Majesty's Secret Service and The Spy Who Loved Me in an all night show which I went to. Even though it doesnt fill the screen, the quality was still excellent, especially OHMSS. If Skyfall is being shown in true IMAX, which they say it should be amazing. |
