You can watch the first episode of "The Alienist" for free on Amazon Prime.
The entire series is coming to Netflix on April 19th.
I think it has good production values, but otherwise it seems like a very conventional serial killer mystery, albeit one set in late 19th century NYC.
I do like Brian Geraghty as young-ish Teddy Roosevelt.

The Alienist looks like it might have a touch of the Beeb's Ripper Street about it.

"Westworld" season 2 has started and I honestly still haven't decided if this is a good show or not. I am glad that the second season seems less enamored with the intricacies of its own structure and is more interested in just telling an entertaining story.
So far, I still feel like that writing hasn't lived up to the quality of the cast.

Fear The Walking Dead Season 4 Ep 03
The out-of-the-blue death of a foundation cast member was shocking and well done. This series has become better than the parent show.

Apparently The Walking Dead will have a new showrunner for Season 9, so we'll see if that improves things. Otherwise, I may well be done with it.

Has anyone here watched "Magic City"? I'm considering getting the DVD set. The premise seems to be something I might like.
Quote :
As Frank Sinatra rings in a new year in the grand ballroom of Miami Beach's most luxurious dream palace - the Miramar Hotel - its visionary leader, Ike Evans, must deal with the Mob, his complicated family and a city in the midst of dramatic change as Fidel Castro takes control of Cuba, just 200 miles offshore. By day the hotel at the center of 'Magic City' is all diving clown acts and cha-cha lessons by the pool, but at night Miami Beach reveals a darker truth. Dopers, dealers, strippers, gangsters and those who arrest them drift together to hear the top nightclub acts perform. Just beneath the surface, racial tensions stir. Ike must deal with all of this, even while global intrigue is brewing right under his roof.

I remember watching the first few episodes when it first premiered. Wasn't bad although the scenery made the show as well as the solid cast.

X-Files on BBC America.
And I have a bone to pick. When an episode is part of a 2-parter on an all-day marathon, show the fucking Part 2 episode afterwards instead of some other random episode.
I'll be sending BBC an email about that.
Cuz I love me all episodes with the smoking man.

I've also been watching X-Files lately although mostly on Blu-ray and saw some Season 3 episodes on BBC yesterday at Grandmas. Was pretty mixed about the newest season so I decided to revisit Season Two in particular as that's the one it felt like the new one was trying to be given it borrowed a number of ideas from it. The Cigarette Smoking Man is one of TV's best villains.

What's your take on "The Expanse" otherwise? It's my favorite current sci-fi show and the most interesting genre exercise since the best years of BSG.
SyFy cancelled The Expanse a few days ago; I only saw S1 and S2. Anyone here watching S3?
Not yet. But in terms of its cancellation, there are strong rumors that Amazon Prime might want to pick it up.

That might be messy. Netflix has The Expanse for the UK. I've no idea who has the streaming rights elsewhere.
Amazon Prime has them in the U.S.

Eight episodes into "Legion" season two and I'm coming around to the idea that this season is one big letdown. I guess it was always going to be hard to devise a follow-up to that original story-line. What I have enjoyed the most are the little vignettes for which Jon Hamm provides the voice-over, but those are only a fraction of the show.

Maybe that's what screwed SyFy; streaming rights are probably more lucrative that anything else atm.
Jeff Bezos himself confirmed yesterday that "The Expanse" is moving to Amazon Prime and is thus saved from cancellation.

Rewatching after a lengthy pause, these past few weeks, Hornblower and the American cop show Boomtown. To call the latter a cop show suggests something else but the first season of this all too brief show, was brilliant.
BBC4 showed a fortnight back (so it might still be on iplayer), Murder in Soho about the mysterious death of the boxer Freddie Mills. Fantastic viewing. Until now I had mostly known Mills for his brief appearances in Carry on Constable and Carry on Regardless plus whatever rumour on his wiki page that he was a serial murder (something heavily debunked in this documentary). At once gives a detailed biography of Mills, how great he was as a boxer and at the same time, head scratching over just how he died. Murder (the Krays or an American gangster) or suicide? The latter analysed in such a way you do wonder how likely it was.
Worth a watch.

Ozark
So season two dropped on Netflix last week. This show never went for realism but I think they went up another notch in terms of how unbelievable some of the story lines have become. It seems poised to get a third season.
I do like the actress who plays Darlene Snell a lot, I wasn't really that familiar with her work prior to this series. Supposedly she is pretty well known in the NYC theater scene.

The Deuce
I wasn't expecting that they would fast-forward five years.
I'm not sure if it was handled properly either, especially with the pimps and their stables of girls. Too little change in that regard to fit with a five year period.
It also appears that the focus will go from James Franco to Maggie Gyllenhaal a bit this season.
I still don't know if it's a show with a worthwhile subtext. It's more a slice of life, which can be fine provided it's interesting enough.
Also not sure if "The Deuce" is the ideal TV show to focus on the nascent NYC punk scene with.

The first 2 episodes of Future Man, SyFy's sweary new comedy. Gamer completes a video game, only to have 2 time-travelling 'warriors' turn up and tell him that the game was a recruitment device to find the one who would turn the tide of the human race's future ... yes it's basically the plot of The Last Starfighter and yes, the show acknowledges this head-on.
I laughed quite a lot. Will watch the remaining episodes.

The as-before mix of the revolting right-on laced with cruel West Coast observation. BJ may be a very female show but there's not many programmes I can think of where naïveté and cynicism co-exist so successfully.
I've only seen the first three eps of S5 so far but the one about the asexual whose mother is a pornstar is pretty funny; the plot involves a barrel of grandma's lube and a marzipan anus - I kid you not. Also the takedown of Mel Gibson and Hollywood hypocrisy is fairly close to the knuckle. As it were...
I have heard so many good things about this show but still haven't found the time to get around to catching up on it. I had no idea they were already onto season five. In general, it's hard to escape the feeling that there is too much TV to even manage to see everything worthwhile.

started rewatching The Prisoner. I find it relevant now -dated some would say but I think it all adds to the appeal of the show. There is, it must be said, a certain delicious joy in seeing MacGoohan play Alcatraz's warden in Escape from Alcatraz a decade on from Prisoner.

Have you seen "Killing Eve"? Also written by Phoebe-Waller Bridge. She's who Lena Dunham wishes she was, had she any real talent.
