My connection with Bond started as a kid. Back when my brother and I were very young we used to watch the marathons on TV. Of course, we would run around pretending to be Bond annoying the hell out of our parents.
And, of course, whenever the parents took us to the video store and let us pick our own movies I always went to the Bond section. I remember on one occasion taking out The Living Daylights.
Much later around 2002, I happened to notice a Bond marathon was on TV. I was leaving for the evening and had just caught the last few minutes of one of the films and was really into it, so I decided what the hell.... grabbed a VHS tape, ran up stairs, and recorded the next film that came on. Went out.
The next day I popped in the tape. It was Goldfinger. Loved it. Quickly ran out and got Goldfigner, Goldeneye and one other Bond film on DVD. From that point on, there was certainly was no bigger thrill than finding a Bond DVD and getting to take it home and watch it.
That kind of sparked the interested right there. Next thing I did was buy Benson's Never Dream of Dying and ended up going to buy a Fleming novel. At that time only the first three re-issues were out.... I believe it was Casino Royale, Goldfinger, and one other. Of course, I opted for Goldfinger since I saw the film.
In addition, also found out that my Dad was a big Bond fan as a child. And he bestowed upon me the greatest gift a father could give to a son. Sean Connery was in the area filming The Molly Maguires when my dad was in his teens. He made a local stop, my father had a toy attache case from FRWL when that film came out. In it was a "Universal Exports" passport. He got Connery to sign the passport. Unfortunately, the case is lost to time. But I have the passport, the autograph, and the fake money/notes that came with it.
And since then I've been a huge fan. Damn. It's hard to believe I've been a big fan for ten years already. Although, with the except of CR and QOS, I haven't watched a Bond film since 2006. Maybe TND I think. I felt like I had over done it with marathons, etc. from 2002-2006. Hopefully, watching them again soon will be like seeing them for the first time.
