That all violates the main tenets of restoration, which is to preserve the elements of the original image, not wipe them and plug new stuff back in.

I used to really think I could recognize an aspect to how Ted Moore shot these things, at least up through TB, maybe DAF as well. Then again, I saw all of those several times in the theater, so it might be 'writ large' in my memory.

The tendency to open up the shadow area on older films is one I really despise. I remember hearing about a colorist telling DP Laszlo Kovacs that they could easily see into the shadow area on some day exteriors on EASY RIDER, and Kovacs told him if he wanted to see into the shadow area, he'd have put some fill in there.

You can kinda adjust for this by changing the brightness and contrast on the TV, but it's a pain to do; that's what I usually have to do for movies with mediocre CG space effects too.

Hah-I tried to do that for ages to hide all the garbage mattes in Star Wars because of the bad transfers!

Look at these, even though the SE DVDs were riddled with artifacts, contrast boosting, edge enhancement they still had the original look and even in these caps you can see the shadow detail that was once there.

When I saw a double feature: Dr. No theatrically on a Lowry print was pristine but slightly dull. Followed by a vintage Thunderball on which the color and scope image will knock your head back. Full-on 60's Technicolor with all the reds, blues and blacks exactly where they should be.

I always admired how Moore shot TB in scope, because to my eyes it always seemed that he tried to keep a similar look and distance as shooting 1.66 on the first three to give some sort of visual continuity despite the new epic-ness.

I caught an old episode of WEEDS early this morning and it struck me that Elizabeth Perkins could be great playing Babs in a tv-movie about the way the Bond have gone in the last decade. Am thinking it could be like HBO's THE LATE SHOW pic about the Letterman/Leno contretemps.

Not sure if anybody has the whole story re: Sony and all that, but am thinking if that doesn't happen, it'll be the biggest miss on a good casting op since nobody made a Fleming bio with Geoffrey Rush.
