By this, I mean one song from that decade that you remember most, for whatever reason...
Mine would be this...I'd be in my room in campus, in the very late 90s, with a joint, reflecting on life....

That would be my second choice.
My first choice...the one I always seem to remember from the 90's....my personal favorite from that decade was:
It's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. Too bad the video was shot in some ghetto.

Everything in the decade rolled into one. The song and record that changed my life. I was 4. Had been listening to Automatic for the People since 2. Great songs here already. Duran Duran has always been unfairly maligned and that record gave them some well needed acclaim. "OW" and "Come Undone" are two classics but the album around them sadly isn't. I recently discovered the debut Cranberries record. Fantastic stuff in addition to the great singles.

Literally the first song that popped in my head when I thought of my definitive 90's song.

I was 18, but it still changed mine. It put a swagger in my step when I needed it most. It made me become myself again. Shortly after Monster was released, I shaved my head and resigned from a job which had a great future financially but was destroying me personally. Everyone seemed to hate Monster, and I felt like the only one who "got it". And I "got it" big time. It was an essential album for REM artistically, and their change in course ultimately led to their most beautiful record, Up. Kenneth is definitely one of my musical touchstones of the 90s, though I find it hard to think of a track which completely defines that decade. We had Madchester, grunge, rave, trip hop, BritPop, so many different eras, which makes it hard to really pigeonhole the 90s to one particular sound.

'Protection' from Massive Attack would be my signature song of the mid 1990s though the eighties was more my period. In 1990, I wrote a scathing article on Bristol describing it as a faux city without a decent football team or band. 'Blue Lines' was released the following year.

I'd say "Two Princes" by The Spin Doctors!
If I was going with classic rockers who carried over into the '90s, I'd say "Until the End of Time" by Foreigner. That song is simply powerful and chilling.
