President Vladimir Putin of Russia has mused that group sex is better than one-on-one intercourse because participants can take a break.

Mr Putin made the observation on Thursday in one of his trademark pithy remarks during his first interview since his inauguration in May, with the Kremlin-controlled, English-language RT television channel.

“Some fans of group sex say that it’s better than one-on-one because, as with any collective work, you can skive off,” he said.

The comment came after the Russian leader had spoken about an orgy that was staged in Moscow’s state biology museum in 2008 which involved Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, 22, one of three feminist activists of the Pussy Riot group who were jailed for two years for hooliganism last month after a politically charged trial.

Mr Putin said he would not express his opinion on the harshness of the sentence against the three women. However, he went on to describe the orgy organised by the Voina (War) art collective, which the group said at the time was a protest at the anointment of Dmitry Medvedev as Mr Putin’s one-term successor in the Kremlin.

“They performed group sex in a public place,” said the president. “It was, as they say, their affair; people have the right to do what they like as long as it doesn’t break the law, but [doing it] in public, then the authorities should have paid attention to that.”

The Russian president has a habit of following up sober remarks with a salty quip, and he went on to make the observation about group sex. “I repeat, this is the affair of each individual person,” he added. “But uploading it to the internet - that, in my view, is a controversial question and could also be subject to legal evaluation.”

While some commentators are likely to suggest he is losing touch, Mr Putin’s risqué remark appeared to show a certain confidence returning to the leader after a turbulent period of street protests around his election for a third, non-consecutive term in the spring. CONT...
