| Perhaps seeing a new Bond film after the one, one dubs the best Bond ever is not a smart smooth. Or maybe seeing OHMSS prior tends to set it up well. Initially the experience wasn't good, had to wait an hour to see it (during which time noted Sir Jackie Stewart waiting also to see it) but as for the film itself...well. As hinted at elsewhere it's likely the best Bond film in a while (we'll say late 80s), Craig's best in which he seemed 'settled' shall we say. Natural almost. The film looked better than QOS, certainly easier to track and all served to erase QOS from memory. Silva's one of the oddest even wackiest villains but with that element of danger. O' Bernice was a striking Bond girl, the one with the wing down perhaps but I was struck by how there was a moment little way after Bardem's capture where I thought 'didn't we have a Bond girl at one point'. But then it made a change not to have a Bond girl all the way through. Liked the Tennyson quote accompanied by the music. There was something about the subsequent shootout that prompted a grim smile, when Mallory collects a gun and starts firing back. Not just any desk jockey. Knowing nods to the past films however subtle or not were good. Skyfall itself, well it was no Monarch of the Glen put it that way. There was something about Bond getting M and taking her north that didn't seem so bad. If the house of cards is falling around you, you might as well fight it out to the death. The hints of the Bond theme pleased, I seem to place great stock in that but it was a joy as a kid to have that moment in a film when the theme came out to some moment. M's death though expected was somehow sad, striking even though Bond's reaction, meh I don't know. What dipped the film was Moneypenny's name reveal...just didn't seem natural. Liked the look of the office at the end, though probably not since TWINE has M's office been seen (DAD sort of in that holodeck thing). Hope to see Fiennes back, Q et al, the office even to lend some consistency.
As review goes it's long but I don't do them often.

| Going by the official ad that had Bond saying "with pleasure", it looks a lot like the DN-LTK office with the padded door. |

| I'll blow some life into this old and useless thread after revisiting Skyfall this evening. Not disappointed a second round (beyond cinema seats that just aren't built for my frame). A key scene does remain the enquiry scene, something about that moment when Mallory collects the gun. Preceding that the spinetingling Tennyson/music/Bond running moment. Never questioned the Bond/M retreat to Skyfall. Best to get the enemy where you need them on your terms. Finney was superb and the music charged. The song sounds Bondian enough, something of the old songs about it or maybe it's just Adele. I look forward to more [M]allory, even Q and Moneypenny just for seeing them in more than one film.
Oddest cinema experience for a while. Half an hour of adverts (mostly scents and mobiles. I mean, the idiotic Bondesque O2 one and the 007 scent) and trailers then the lights go up, Odeon employee says that the heating is problematic still and it should cool in an hour. If you want to go to the 8.30 showing we can do that. No fear, I'm not sitting for more 30mins batches to watch it.
Score remains 8/10 firmly higher than CR and QOS. |
