I am firmly in the don't-like section as I hold all Bond films to the '60s standard of Connery awesomeness and escapist adventure.

To wit, the first Bond I quibbled with upon initial viewing was TMWTGG, having launched my first-release journey a year-and-a-half earlier, with LALD. While LALD passed the sniff test, Rog was found lacking in Gun. He didn't pull off the slap-around Anders scene well (cringe-worthy) and I didn't find him convincing in his shakedown of Lazar. He didn't move very well in the karate school fight either. Rog alas, despite showing real potential in LALD, was clearly not Sean and would never be, but still I appreciated his efforts.

Alas TMWTGG became the first Bond film that wasn't quite perfect and the first to land in the "dislike" box. It was the first slightly tarnished Bond, which at the time was a huge deal. It holds up rather well going forward though.

Others that have achieved initial dislike were both TSWLM and MR due to the egregious bursts of silliness, hithertoo not seen before on the Bond pallet.

FYEO passed mustard. So did OP, despite the Tarzan yell (I'm making allowances for the Moore films by this point). Same with AVTAK (it gets the Rog allowance for the Beach Boys interlude)

The Dalts films passed OK. No problems here although Dalts could be underwhelming at times. The realization that the Connery-bar may have been set too high for mere mortals to even wave at (Lazenby excepted) is now beginning to crystalize.

The Brozzer films all passed OK, but for DAD. Bond in a prison camp for 14 months, did not pass mustard, landing the film squarely in the initial dislike box. I've since grudgingly retreived it, as other parts of the film have grown on me. Broz's limitations as Bond though were apparent from the start, but there was at least respect for the Sean persona and Bondian escapist adventure. The Connery bar though, now seems to be perched so high, that it's in outer space. Finding it again has become akin to a grail quest.

I've had to dump all the Craig films in the initial dislike box. First of all, given his all-wrong look, Craig is hard to digest as Bond at the best of times, but he does compensate in other areas. Being a generous sort, I was willing to make a Craig allowance, as I did for both Rog and Broz. But the Craig films go off reservation in so many other ways, that not even a Craig allowance can compensate.

It's important to understand what "dislike" actually means in these contexts. It simply translates to being "enough off the original gold standard", that transgressions can't be entirely overlooked. These films have to prove themselves over time, after initially stumbling out of the gate. They are not quite 10/10's.

The Craig films IMO are only in the 8/10 range. They need to find their way to the 9/10 space as the other lesser post-perfection films have managed. It might take some time. :study:

I don't think it was written in the right way for Moore. Moore does his best with writing that's wrong for him.

I suspect that was Maibaum trying to make Moore written more tough like Connery ala FRWL, because Mankiewicz already knew by then that Rog is not Sean and you can't pretend they're the same. It's such a rushed messy film.

I'm fairly certain that that was Guy Hamilton's call, not Maibaum's.

Very odd. After LALD being a huge hit you think the director of that film wouldn't try changing the character too much.

He's perfectly fine in LALD, but it's Spy before Rog properly nails 'his' Bond to the mast, so to speak.

In SPY he's unbearably smug.
