I was thinking more of the process (sound generation) involved in getting that specific waveform, once you've got the synth. I'm pretty sure it's a big fat Moog Modular.
I'm remember getting a digi-approximation on my DX7, then losing it. That was almost a year ago.
Important to note that there's a 6 string Danelectro bass doubling the Moog, so the attack is disguised a bit.

Yeah, that's a chain filter, which was patented, so it would have been a Moog. EMS used diode filters which had a very different sound, exemplified by On the Run.
Not sure why you would want to emulate the OHMSS bass sound, as it's horrible to my ears. (FM would manage it very well.) I prefer warm dub-style sub-basses - early Akai samplers are great for that as they generate a test-tone. I double all my basslines with one, which still leaves seven outputs free.

I love wobbly dubstep bass, but there's a time and place for it. I like getting new tricks up my sleeve, and TBH I love that OHMSS bass tone, cause it's so unique. Very nasal and electronic, but with that trademark analogue warmth. I'm just wondering what I'd have do with (imaginary) oscillators and filters to get it.
Yes the EMS diodes had a very distinctive sound. Very square wave-y.

I'm a hardware guy, but the few people I know who are still making music for a living are all into softsynths. I used to sneer at them, but the lastest emulation software is very convincing.
I've got a stack of old 19" gear that heats my studio, but is probably well past its use-by-date. :( If you have a technical mindset, this is interesting:

Not a big Patrick Doyle fan here, but this cue from Branagh's FRANKENSTEIN nearly brings me to tears. It hits me hard at the 1:00 mark.

Love it. Sounds like something John Barry might come up with in his BODY HEAT-mode. Love those breathy subtones on the sax.

Yeah, it's a great theme. Shame it's only a digital download--I'd like to have the expanded album.
But, for $3.99, I can't really complain.

Pianist Christopher O'Riley has rearranged Herrmann's score for VERTIGO into a lovely suite for piano and violin. Herrmann's music doesn't typically work in minimalistic arrangements, but O'Riley makes it work. It's available on the album SHUFFLE.PLAY.LISTEN, if you're interested.

Giving the Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy score a whirl on YouTube. Read the book this week and tried to picture the music. There was something about it when watching the film that got under my skin. Oh to speak eloquently. To be predictable, it rocks...
