Skydance Productions, Annapurna Pictures and Paramount Pictures announced today that their Terminator reboot will be released by Paramount Pictures on June 26, 2015.
The companies' joint press release describes the fifth Terminator film as "the first in a stand-alone trilogy."
It will be produced by Megan Ellison of Annapurna and David Ellison of Skydance. Dana Goldberg and Paul Schwake of Skydance will serve as executive producers. Avatar's Laeta Kalorgridis and Drive Angry's Patrick Lussier are attached to write the script.
Curiously, the announcement makes no mention of the involvement of series star Arnold Schwarzenegger. Perhaps his oft-mentioned return to the franchise isn't quite a done deal just yet?

Yeah, I seem to remember hearing that Ahnuld was doing another one.
Oh well, another reboot/remake/retcon/rectum of an 80s movie.

No wonder they're rebooting, Salvation was crap.

Shouldn't this be in the multiplex section?
Anyway, the rumored set-up for this one is actually pretty fun, with a 1950s setting and The Rock facing off against Arnie.

There was barely enough material in the franchise for two movies, and we're already at four as it is. What kind of story will they tell in three more features that won't be a rehash of the old stuff?

I'll give credit to SALVATION for actually trying to go for a new angle instead of rehashing the formula of the first three. Too bad it wasn't that good.

Most entertaining thing about it was Bale's leaked onset rant, which seemed like utterly misplaced passion when I saw the movie.

Considering how ugly the film turned out, the DP kind of deserved it.

What separates the first two films, really, is their Carpenter-ness. They are powered by a kind of cool existential dread and moments of savage, vicious violence. Sure, the second film dilutes this with goofy humor, but it's still there, at least.
I don't think there's a chance of TERMINATOR 5 recovering that.

The TV show they made flirted with some interesting directions, without ever truly exploring them properly.
In the end it went off in five, six different direction to eventually end up nowhere.

I enjoyed the 3rd, too - some decent action sequences and chuckles, plus the commendable decision to go with a bleak ending. And it still has Ahnult (that iffy attempt to crowbar a version of him into Salvation barely counts, IMHO), without whom it's pointless trying to make a Terminator movie.

Given the rapid obsolescence of military hardware, shouldn't be a problem to erase Arnie from future instalments. Maybe they could go with a nuke-equipped Helen Mirren next.

Forget Arnie and Cameron. The TERMINATOR films are nothing without Brad Fiedel.

I almost forgot of that show. I only saw the pilot, and I already saw how convoluted it was going to get from there and just didn't bother.

Yeah, his soundscape makes an enormous contribution to the first two films.
Seems like he hasn't been up to much lately.

Fiedel is not an exceptional composer, but he knows one thing more than today's pretenders: melody is everything. If you can send the crowd out humming the theme, you've made your mark.
Too many of today's composers think melody is cheap. It's their fucking job, ferchrissake.

Bullshit. Writing film music is far more than coming up with a memorable tune. Harmony, melody, rhythm and timbre are of equal importance, but above all, a film score should be dramatically effective, and a healthy middle ground between the composer and director/producer's vision.

So what was it you liked about Fiedel's Terminator theme exactly? The preset sounds he uploaded from the e-mu and Syco library? There's not an original sound in any of his work.
If you know so much it's about time you delivered. Shit or get off the pan.

"I use presets. An oboe is a preset. Its how you use it that matters." - Jerry Goldsmith
The Terminator melody's fine, but without the chord progressions and rhythmic pedal point it'd be a damp squib.
Besides, there's more to the score than that one theme. What carries the film and gives it is ambience is the soundscape Fiedel created with his Prophet-10 and Oberheim System. Yeah, it's derivative of Carpenter/Howarth, but then so is the film.

John Williams didn't make it big till his mid-40s. Before that he earned his dough as a session pianist for the big studio orchestras.
I'll do what the greats did: work my way up. Maybe as an orchestrator/arranger.
