One thing that I, for the life of me, can't figure out re: the admiral that Xenia is with at the casino. My understanding:

Xenia takes him back to that yacht where she kills him.


During which, someone is seen taking the ID:


The next day Bond arrives, finds him in the cupboard and falls out, dead.


Pretty straightforward? But who flicks up the ID of the admiral next to Xenia when they approach the Tiger helicopter?

I'm guessing, someone else.

What I want to know is, why did Commander Pederson leave the US submarine fleet after that set-to at the Tears of Allah, change his name and join the Canadian Navy?

But it looks exactly like him. The only thing I can think of is that Alec puts on a fake beard because they seem to be a similar height, although it is Ouromov who gets out of the tiger at Severnaya, but he doesn't really have the same build as the admiral.

I've always wondered myself. Seems like a pretty half-assed sequence, looking back at it.

How about the thug whom Bond belts with the water bucket in the sauna in St. Petersburg? He was the right size and had a beard.

While I dislike dredging up an old topic, I always thought that this was something of a riff on Thunderball and that film's sequence with doppelgangers. It would make sense - it's elaborate, but Trevelyan already has money to burn - and the actual Admiral and his double are both involved or interact with Onatopp, just like Thunderball with Francois Derval/Angelo and Volpe.

Right from the first time.

Either both angles weren't filmed on the same day, or the editor got the clips mixed up.

I always thought the guy with Xenia was Orumov for some reason.

It must have been Ouromov. I think it was just him and Xenia that got out of the helicopter at the Goldeneye facility.

Yeah, but they aren't really the same build... Wouldn't they have noticed a discrepancy between the ID photo and the imposter's appearance?

Or, rather, it was probably still Billy Mitchell, from behind, to give the impression that it was an imposter of the same build. What happened to him when Xenia stopped to pick up Ouromov is easy to assume, given the example AlisonOnatopp just raised about Derval/Angelo in TB.

What did they even use the ID for? Did they ambush the pilots right around the corner before they went out to the helicopter?

Haven't seen GE for a little while so the finer details are a little sketchy... Assuming it was to gain access, which I wouldn't have needed to see to put two and two together, but the fact that the admiral is dead is why it's a little confusing.

Granted he doesn't get to say much, but for a Canadian called Chuck what dialogue he has sounds English-accented to me.

Well Ourumov and Xenia are the ones who show up at Severnaya. Either Xenia makes a pit stop to drop off her mysterious accomplice and pick up Ourumov, or it was Ourumov all along.

What kind of range could a helicopter like that have? France to Siberia must be a long trek and take a lot of fuel.
