Watched TB Friday night. Leiter wears the world's coolest Hawaiian shirt in that one. I wish I could find a replica for myself.

Nice shades too, though they don't beat Bonds.

Leiter had some pretty sweet shades in DN, too. Not sure they make 'em like that anymore, and not sure I'd have the nerve to wear 'em if they did.

Nice coincidence Khanners, I too rewatched Thunderball over the weekend. Seemed to fit in well with the glorious weather we've been enjoying over here.

Good for you, Salomoppers. We're lodged in the midst of one of the most wretched droughts in memory. Perhaps I should have watched QOS.

TMWTGG UE with the Roger Moore commentary. It's my first UE which I bought since there was a scratch on my SE DVD TMWTGG. I must say, I'm really impressed by the UE digital remastering look of the film. I really enjoyed Sir Rog's commentary and would like to hear his others. I like how he commented at the end he thought TMWTGG was good. It was his 1st time seeing it since its premiere. My only disappointment with the UE DVD is it didn't include the deleted footage of the Bond vs. Scaramanga gun duel at the end. Now, I'm debating whether I should buy more UEs or wait to purchase a blue ray player.

Part of it is included in a trailer on that DVD, if that helps. :)

You mean this one-
Thanks, G section :D I'm guessing that deleted footage is probably either lost or rotting away somewhere in a vault at Pinewood Studios.

Watched Gun last night. This is a very cool and utterly Bondian flick. And I was very impressed with Christopher Lee on this viewing. He really did fill the screen.
In addition to having the series' best PTS, it also has the best opening line: "Nick Nack, Tobasco!"
The biggest weakness in this film is the title track...naff as naff can be. In 2008 there was some excuse simply because the pop music scene was and is so dreadful. But good musicians abounded in 1974 so I don't know what happened there.

I'd say GUN's biggest weakness is the script. It just think it got bungled.

Golden Gun can't figure out if it wants to be gritty or comedic. At least in LALD, most things are played for laughs. In Golden Gun, we get joke, BITCH SLAP, joke.

But even then, there's a ruthless arrogance to the humour - as well. Bond being a bit of c***, whether or not he's interrogating or cracking a joke about tits.

Saw Thunderball recently for the first time in about three years... thoroughly enjoyable this time, with the final act not feeling at all like it drags on and on. Outside some of the backscreen projections and editing, I couldn't pinpoint major weaknesses. I would now place TB almost in my top three and an improvement over Dr. No.

One of my problems is that most of the time he's just plainly being a c*** - it doesnt help that he's consistently surrounded by fools in said film, either.

No, he's likeable only through his wry humour, and his deliberate swagger. To enjoy it, I try to pretend it's The Jackal under the guise of James Bond. using his assignment to South East Asia to rid a rival competitor. Then down a heavy drink (preferably Phuyuck - with a pinch slice of third nipple) and try to think about the plot.

I have two issues with that:
1. Having to pretend Bond is in the guise of something else clearly shows that its lacking.
2. Trying to think about the plot only makes things worse - the girlfriend of the world's greatest freelance assassin somehow mails a golden bullet to a supposedly "secret service" in order to get said secret service to do her dirty work and rid her of her abusive boyfriend. Luckily, said boyfriend is not only a dangerous assassin, he's also one of the world's foremost proponents of solar energy and has stolen the world's only hope of harnessing the power source to an effective degree. With only Nick Nack and that other guy to help him, he builds an untracable palace in the middle of Red Chinese waters filled with massive solar dishes and liquid nitrogen pools, not to mention a huge funhouse full of models and cameras and the like. He also appears to own a karate dojo for Bond to be taken to, filled with recruits who as a team cant beat two schoolgirls, and a flying car. All the while Bond tracks him with the dumbest government agent in the commonwealth and a Deep South cop he's met before. You're going to need more than one heavy drink to digest that piece of crap, "benign bizarre" or not.

CASINO ROYALE (2006)
Aryan nuBond is a thoroughly unlikeable character. James Bond isn't meant to be a totally likeable knight in shining armour, of course, but this bloke's an egotistical man-child who will hurl himself off cranes to catch a nobody, but God forbid he should light up a cigarette. Gritty.

Watched You Only Live Twice. What a beautiful film - the cinematography, lighting, set design and costumes all complimented by Barry's brilliantly lush score. I wish the story was just that little bit stronger though. Suprisingly, I wasn't as bothered by Connery's performance this time round. I noticed though his bored noature stems from his tone, and not so much his body language.
Still an enjoyable film and very much more entertaining than many recent non-Bond films.

Outside of the Pepper interlude, I actually find this to be a fairly serious film. And much of the non-Pepper humor ("Not from where I'm standing." "And that would be a terrible waste because they're very expensive.") is genuinely witty and not hamfisted silliness like much of P&W's stuff.

It simply means the performance is 'un-Bond-like', or 'un-Fleming-like' - not inferior on its own accord.
Personally, I find the odd deviance from Fleming refreshing. Not all of it has to be either 'true' or 'untrue' and thrown into a bin because of that.

Don't bogged down in the details mate, it's not worth the time or effort. Look at the big picture. Its strengths are its Asiatic atmosphere, wit, colourful characters, its ideas (how many degrees separate Bond and Scaramanga) and the lead performance. Not the kind of geeky, plot mechanics that fans love to deconstruct.
I'm looking at you - Tightpantsonthesun.

I thought Bond was just an asshole in TMWTGG, especially with that line.

It's got some interesting ideas, I think, but as a film TMWTGG doesn't cut it for me. There isn't a satisfying plot to speak of - Bond's after the Solex but never recovers it, Scaramanga has Bond marked for death, but no, he really doesn't...

But a funny and clever arsehole. That alone separates him Craig's Bond in QOS, who's just an automaton.

I care about plot and I care about Gun's plot, but really, the Solex Agitator was a sideline. This movie is about two men--Bond and Scaramanga. And from that standpoint, the plot was fine, chiefly because Moore and Lee made their characters quite compelling.

I can do that, which is why I can love YOLT
but TMWTGG doesn't have enough flash to distract me from it's numerous shortcomings ;)
