well, I get my DVD "rentals" for free since it's my stores,
is it still worth a FREE rental?
why was it even nominated for Best Film and Best Director by BAFTA?

It was one of the finest films of last year. A potent, mature thriller.

Potent, perhaps. But "mature" isn't a word I'd use to describe it.

Honestly, the amount of skepticism on these boards is getting to absurd heights. Drive was a good movie. No one is claiming it was another Vertigo, but it was a good thriller that paid homage to several genres and/or movies.
Some people need to crawl out of their own posterior.

I wasn't sure what to make of Drive when I saw it recently, a most bewildering experience, primarily the problem was I couldn't give a crap about anyone in it - albeit a recurring problem with many films of late for me, it wasn't really an action movie, it didn't really have a plot, it wasn't really very realistic and there wasn't as much as one interesting or engaging performance throughout its length, some of the cinematography was nice and thats about all I can offer in praise, despite that I don't actually feel I hate it, about half an hour in the vacant stares and pregnant pauses began to induce the giggles, I made a note to find a bullet proof matress - you never know when you might need one - but I can't think of any reason to watch it again.

An overwhelmingly ugly film.
Disgusting to look at even before the repellent violence.

What did you make of the music?

It's '80s music to people who weren't there.

Beg to differ. My wife came of age back then and is completely and utterly stuck in the early 80s musically (not a bad thing IMO as long as you're listening to stuff coming from the UK) and she considers DRIVE one big sweet kiss from that era (and she hasn't even seen THIEF all the way through.)
I think the only way she could have liked DRIVE more is if Paul Weller and/or Morrissey was in it.

Are there actually any genuine songs of the 1980s in DRIVE? I didn't spot any. To me, the dross on the soundtrack sounds like contemporary hipsters trying to make music in a 1980s style, and it has about as much character and authenticity as Sebastian Faulks writing as Ian Fleming.
Considering how many superb synthpop songs came out in the 1980s (both mainstream and cult), I'm at a loss to understand why we didn't have Gosling drive around listening to, say, Depeche Mode ("Never Let Me Down Again"), New Order ("Confusion"), very early Pet Shop Boys, Bobby O, Jellybean Benitez, etc. instead of soulless faux-1980s crap.

Say what you will, but I dig a few of the songs on the DRIVE soundtrack, especially "Nightcall" by Kavinsky & Lovefoxxx.

I certainly liked it better than THE HELP.
Me? I liked it, didn't love it. Felt like it had potential to be more.
But I liked when Brooks stuck a fork in a dude's eye.

Fifth-rate Giorgio Moroder backing with badly programmed vocoder on top. This is called progress?
