I think I recorded that from TCM a month ago. I'll check it out some time. It's got that hot young Babs Hershey too.

I've seen STUNTMAN about twenty times now, but the best story I know about it is slightly post-release. My best friend from high school used to attend a lot of National Film Society functions and the like, and he was at this thing where they were honoring O'Toole. The actor asked for a show of hands on who had seen THE STUNTMAN and there were several. He asked if any had seen it twice, and it went down to a few. He asked for three and my friend's hand was still up, and still up when O'Toole asked 'four times.' At that point, O'Toole bolted from the stage, rushed down and kissed my friend John's hand.
I think if I had to make a list of the most influential films (not best, not favorite) on the way I think about movies, they would mostly be stuff I saw several times first-run in the late 70s/early 80s, like THE STUNTMAN, ALL THAT JAZZ, APOCALYPSE NOW, LOOKING FOR MR GOODBAR, CUTTER'S WAY, RAGTIME, BODY SNATCHERS remake, TRUE CONFESSIONS and TAPS, along with the ultimate cynic's movie, TWILIGHT'S LAST GLEAMING.

That scene where he kissed Page was atrocious.
Can you play any other tune?
Then again, this is coming from someone who actually enjoyed INCEPTION - and found Gordon-Levitt, Page and also Tom Hardy the best things about the picture.

What'd you like about it?
I like non-linear stories. Besides, most blockbusters are intended only to sell popcorn, but Inception requires a modicum of brain activity as well.

All brain and no heart. Figuratively, of course.

And you think that's a problem? If the people with heart were running the show we'd still be in the caves freezing to death.
The more I think about Inception the better it gets. Nolan lost me with Batman, but Inception marks the return of the mind games I so enjoyed in Memento.

I could ask the same of those who praise the film like it's the Second Coming of Cinema. Luckily, most of them were left behind on that sinking ship we all once sailed on.

I can see where you're coming from.
I wanted to be impressed by "Inception". I loved the plot, but I felt that it was watered down too much with standard, generic blockbuster shit. The beginning worked for me, but once we get to the scenes following the train in the road, I began to lose interest. Nolan obviously had a brilliant idea, but wanted to sell the hell out of it. Just add machine guns, explosions, and a cast of big-name, mostly amateur actors.
If I had to rate it alongside his other works, I'd say it was better than "Batman Begins" and "The Prestige". About the same as "The Dark Knight". But, not better than "Memento", "Following", or "Insomnia".
I'm glad he'll be cutting out the superhero shit, though. I look forward to seeing more films from him that I can take seriously.

The people with heart shouldn't be running the show (as our political leaders), but they should be our artists. Our filmmakers, painters, sculptors, composers, dancers, and so forth. People with real soul, who have lived a little, and understand the human condition. Not childish geeks like Tarantino and Nolan, who live in their ivory towers, .inventing self-indulgent adolescent fantasies and pointless, self-important mindgames.
That's one of the problems with society today, lack of character building life experience. That's why I'm going to be a mine clearance diver for the Royal Navy. At the very least, it would give me something that a lot of the post-war, post-conscription generations lack.

It's odd you are equating Tarantino and Nolan, when I believe they couldn't be further apart in terms of personality.

So do I. The greats mostly all had a healthy dose of both intellect and soul.
But Erica was suggesting that heart doesn't matter. That I've got a problem with. And I think that kind of mindset is why most modern (especially indie) cinema is so carnal, sterile, amoral, heartless, and yes nihilistic.
If I want mindgames, I do a crossword, or suduku. Fuck that shit.

The Lost Weekend(1945; dir. Billy Wilder)
It was a'ight. A little over the top, but a decent portrayal of an addict trying to get his fix. I loved the first 20 minutes. I loved the theremin.

The restored cut is on Blu, right? When I upgrade, maybe this summer, it'll be on my list of BD's to buy.
I've only seen the Moroder one.

The Freddie Mercury song was great, though.

Funny, after owning the new Restored DVD, all I want to do is find and watch the Moroder version.
The Laserdisc can be found for a cool $200 bucks and is probably the most expensive non Criterion videodisc you could find.

Ed Wood
and
Plan 9 from Outer Space
Had a good chuckle watching these with my film school buddies. It's the cyclical, overly redundant dialogue that makes Plan 9 such a joy to watch for my part.
