| Seems like if Nolan grows fond of you, you immediately become part of his usual ensemble. |

That rule doesn't seem to apply to Matthew Nolan. |

The Joe Wright fanclub is a lonely, lonely place. Turns out Gordon-Levitt is Alberto Falcone, as some had suspected: http://www.variety.com/article/VR1118034129?refCatId=13 Which is good, cause he looks exactly like Tom Wilkinson. Y'know. It's Variety and it's not the Vulture, so I guess it's legit. |

The Joe Wright fanclub is a lonely, lonely place. Are you in it? I am. Only for Atonement. I've got no time for the other two. I couldn't even get through an episode of his Charles II miniseries. Kinda like Edgar Wright, actually. I've only really like Hot Fuzz. The magic of 2007, I guess. |

| I was reading the comments to an article about the JGL casting and I saw this in response to someone who said The Dark Knight was solid but not better than Batman Begins: - Quote :
- You're either high, or a moron. I won't speculate as to which.
And that's the reason why some people don't like the Nolan Batman films. The fanboys are intolerable. |

| I like Batman Begins a lot more than The Dark Knight. Take Ledger out of TDK and there's not much left imho. |

I agree, more or less, though I still like The Dark Knight. |

I agree, more or less, though I still like The Dark Knight. I don't dislike it per se...I just think it's only about half as good as its fans do, which is still quite good, oddly enough. |

| I had one problem with the Joker in TDK. Not Ledger's acting, but the writing. He seemed far too self-aware - always going on about chaos and anarchy and all that jazz, when he's supposed to be a madman and when the audience can come to the same conclusions about his nature that he spoon-feeds us.
Two-Face was a lot more compelling as the film's emotional core. Should've used him more. I worry that characters won't get their fair share of development in Rises if they try to stuff in too many.
I think TDK realized much more of its potential than Begins. But if Begins had been done better, I might prefer it. I'm not big on origin stories, and it also pandered more to the dumbass-American-action-movie crowd. What I really loved were some of the more fantastical elements, like the Scarecrow (great reflection of the hero, whose main objective also was to cause fear) and Wayne being trained by ninjas. |

That's one of Nolan's biggest problems for me. The man's got as much subtlety as a giant red sledgehammer. There's next to no subtext in his films, or allusions or allegories. Everything is in the foreground, spelt out in big capital letters for even the lowest denominator to understand. That's bad direction, and writing, and shows a lack of craft and intellect. |

I agree, more or less, though I still like The Dark Knight. I agree more than less. Had it not been for Ledger, the film would have been empty for me. But for Bale's lisp, I suppose... :geek: |

| Gordon-Levitt is a fine bit of casting. I find him entertaining in everything I see him in, but Mysterious Skin (and, to a lesser degree, The Lookout) is proof that he's an incredibly good actor as well. I doubt The Dark Knight Rises will push him to such a good performance, but he's very capable. |

Well, that's kinda the thing. He's not really a madman, and he's not bound by the laws of reality either - he's more the devil, conjured up out of thin air. He spouts psychobabble (like everyone else in Nolan's films), because his chief weapon is influence - which is ultimately what all of Nolan's films are about, to varying degrees. It's the linchpin of the Batman films, for sure - the core theme of Batman Begins, which is then expounded and writ large in The Dark Knight. The Joker's nature and character is about the least important thing in the film. It's about how the other characters react to it. People seem to assert that the Joker and Batman are the main characters of the film, when they're not: it's Wayne, Dent, and Gordon. |

| That's how I always saw it too. Batman Begins was about Bruce Wayne. In TDK Wayne was no longer front and center and people complained about it thinking the Joker was stealing the spotlight just like it was happening in the 90s films. No, no and no. TDK is absolutely more of an ensemble story with every character getting equal due, no short changing. |
