Amazon reveals their new Ian Fleming reprints and launches online store

In April it was reported that Amazon had closed a deal to publish the 14 classic Ian Fleming James Bond titles in the U.S. as both print editions and eBooks.

Today Amazon has revealed their promised "new look" series and have also launched a special online store where you can pre-order the books for an October 16, 2012 release.

The print versions will be paperbacks published under Amazon's Thomas & Mercer imprint and will be available to all retailers. The eBooks will initially only be available via Amazon's Kindle store.

Here are all the covers with thanks to our friends at Amazon Publishing and IFP. Certainly these are the most avant-garde Bond covers ever!

the sleeves are ugly!

I like 'em a lot, even though I am getting mighty tired of the whole minimalist approach to Bond book covers.

Well, I like a couple of these covers. YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE is great, for instance.

Others are unimaginative and by-the-numbers (OCTOPUSSY AND THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS is particularly "on-the-nose"), while a couple make no sense - why is THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN represented by.... a gate?

THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN cover image is of train tracks.

Ah, I see. Train tracks didn't even cross my mind till you pointed it out. I did genuinely believe that it was supposed to be a gate.

I think I "get" the rest of them, with the exception of those that are clearly abstract representations of nothing in particular (e.g. LIVE AND LET DIE). That said, Bond novices could be forgiven that assuming that CASINO ROYALE involves 007 at a darts tournament.

What happened? Bond art is supposed to be enticing...
This is why I stick with my favorites, the 60's era Signet paperbacks.

I like these a lot.

The Spy Who Loved Me is terrific, all motel flames and willowy Vivienne.

The only ones I don't like particularly care for are On Her Majesty's Secret Service and For Your Eyes Only, if only because my small mind can't figure out what the fuck they're supposed to be.

I like the rest. I never particularly care for the abstract covers but these have a simplicity I like.

The Doctor No one. I don't get it.

I'm not so sure there's anything TO get with that one.
