| http://www.denofgeek.com/us/movies/james-bond/257462/james-bond-its-time-to-return-to-absurdity-with-love From voodoo to the Death Collector, from Rosa Klebb to Xenia Onatopp, absurdity or as PK puts it, the Benign Bizarre must return to the Bond series. Skyfall did this, but as the article suggests, SPECTRE for neither here nor there in committing to neither the faux grittiness of Craig's era, or the traditional elements. In my opinion, QOS is guilty of this as well - Elvis is a prime example: quirky in character, yet no real reason to be there. Casino Royale simply doesn't even try. So the article is rather accurate, except for its assessment of CR. |

| Great and much needed article and it's especially heartening to see someone else note one of the major flaws in Spectre being the lack of commitment to a particular style. To me the absurdity is a significant part of the Bond formula going back to Fleming's novels. Bond films shouldn't be cold and mundane just because a generation of film goers can't look past their own boring hang-ups but should elevate themselves above the audience expectations. |

| Solid article indeed. The first person who commented on it summarises what we're up against in Current Year. To be a salvageable, true-to-Fleming franchise, Bond needs to not only bring back a sprinkling of benign bizarre, but needs to be so sexist/fun/etc. that it gets absolutely savaged by Bottomfeed and the rest of the SJW-media complex. Anything less than that constitutes a cultural surrender and you may as well move on to a gender-fluid Jane al-Bond. |

| Arguably a little bit of 'I don't care, I just want to get my leg over' has crept back into the last couple of movies ... Bond knows Severine has had a hugely psychologically-damaging past but shags her anyway, and in SPECTRE he lays both the widow of a bad guy who he killed and the daughter of a former enemy. |

| As long as the absurdity isn't CGI that's worse than 1980s video games.
I might have enjoyed the Brozza CGI more if it wasn't for the cheap special effects. |

| By absurdity, I'm referring to narrative elements - characters, scenes, etc. Besides, CGI/special effects are mostly cosmetic, and the modern equivalent to the back projection of yesteryear. No one slams DN or FRWL for the back projection during the car chase in the former or the helicopter exploding in the latter. - Strangeways wrote:

Good point. Reminds me of a post I saw on Facebook. Someone asked if Bond or Bourne was better, and someone else suggested they should team up. But going with Craig-Bond and Bourne, they'd have to get over themselves first before tackling any external threat. - CJB wrote:

Ha exactly. And that's why SF was so successful. It embraced its identity and showcased Bond being Bond by seducing Severine despite her backstory - to reinforce that women want to sleep with him. Feminists may have felt offended but it would have generated more press and curiosity for people to go see the film and make up there own mind - and anyone with half a brain would have realised that it was consensual and part of the Bond mythology. |

| There was the return of absurdity aplenty with Spectre so perhaps this is the direction we are already headed anyhow? |

It needs something else too - glamour. The latest films may have plush locations and beautiful women but they're so hell bent on being 'gritty' that they've missed the glamour. |

| At least they adapted a bit of the Colonel Sun torture scene while doing it. Always look on the bright side of life. |

There is no bright side. Spectre is the Bond equivalent of an Atkins diet burger. |

| But the use of the best continuation novel in a Bond moment at least lit my face up and no doubt a few other literary Bond fans. I agree that "step-brothergate" was a load of dog shite though. |

| Then reaching for the chocolate and ice cream, knowing they'll never silence the screams of the men you've killed. |

| I'll take that job. I'll write that script and it'll be fucking amazing. I'm desperate to get my doggy onscreen in a Bond film and this is the way to do it. |
