Subject: Why is Sean Connery voice dubbed at the beginning? Wed Aug 14, 2019 7:19 pm
So I was watching DAF in 4K on iTunes.
Something struck me suddenly: it's very clear Sean's voice isn't his from the beginning "where is he?" up to the "My name is Bond. James Bond."
Then when he says there are a lots of thing she can get off her chest, his voice is back.
Anyone noticed?

If it's true, then perhaps it's because $1.25 million only bought EON eight weeks of Connery's time. If they rewrote the opening scene, rather than pay Sean another $20,000 for an extra week or portion thereof, they just used someone else's hands (and foot) and a voice mimic (Robert Reitty?) in the PTS to build up the big reveal (he's BACK!).

Is that confirmed? I never got the sense that was NOT Sean's voice.

You can hear the switch very easily when he says stuff about off your chest.

I heard that it is simply sped up. Why, I don't know.

I always thought it was Sean's voice just dubbed over the original version (the why is beyond me. Might be in the DAF commentary or Making-Of doco). Could have been sped up as opposed to a rerecording because it's certainly Sean.
Incidentally, in the trailer, you can hear the original take.

My understanding is that a big part of why the 60s films had a ton of ADR work was because the on-set sound quality was not that great.

Yes the trailer has the line with his real voice. I have no clue why it sounds different in the final film, like mickey mouse speedup (only it's not speeded up, it's pitched up).
I think it's something wrong with mastering the Blu-ray. The whole film is at the right pitch except the beginning.
Does it play the same on VHS?

Easily one of the most stupid ADR moments in the series. It IS Sean but the pitch has been sped up to perhaps better match the lip reading which it doesn't. I assume they had to make some trims for censor due to her top removal and it messed with the previous lines. For that moment 007 is on helium. It has ALWAYS bothered me. And of course as mentioned the trailer shows it perfectly normal so go figure.

Did you notice when the guy says "Cairo" and also when he is talking about the woman names, the lips don't match.
The last line of the last guy is upon a cut to the woman he's talking about.
Maybe they cut shots for violence, and had to speed up the beginning to maintain sync at the last moment?
In the trailer the shot at 0:27 is not in the film. It's from the pre-credits sequence.
Looks to me they hacked the beginning and speeded up the audio to match, the match comes when Bond speaks about her chest.
EDIT: I saw it at the cinema, and I'm fairly certain it didn't play the same way.
Maybe this speed up was done on video because they botched the negative?
Anyone owns an old VHS?

It's always been that way on every edition I've ever seen whether on official home releases or broadcasts. The fella in Tokyo indeed has the poorly dubbed "Cai-Cai-Cairo!".
The sync is good in the Cairo casino despite also being dubbed but the speed of Sean approaching Marie is pitched way waaaaaay up and then comes back into proper sync and speed as we cut back to the shot of Sean kneeling to speak of chests...
It's this way also on every release I currently have which is: VHS, LD, 90's broadcast taped to VHS, SE DVD, UE DVD and BD.
