Watched MOONRAKER. I'm glad this one has swung into the "acceptable to like" category. I certainly like it. The locations and production design are glorious. I like the cinematography a lot too, particularly the lighting in the romantic scenes. A sweeping, globetrotting, atmospheric Bond movie with a score to match. And that Corinne.

I want a modern Bond film with a bit of MR's glamour in it, not grimy subway tubes. Hopefully SKYFALL's casino will at least look nice.

I'm deliberately avoiding Bond movies for the next 6 months...should make Skyfall that more exciting to look out for.

Not that I'll be experiencing withdrawal symptoms...I've got loads of other movies to watch....

I recall watching CR a few days before seeing QOS. It made the latter all the more dissapointing, I think.

I'm rewatching the Bond films in order of release. Should watch GF soon! I'm just really looking forward to YOLT (not sure why...), OHMSS, OP, GE, TND and TWINE.

By that logic, the thing to do is watch DAD before SF's opening night.

I'll do all of the films, one a night, leading up to SKYFALL's release.

Yeah I'm holding off on the Bond films for awhile. Haven't actually tried watching any of them this year. I already pre-ordered the blu-ray box set, there's no solid release date yet but I hope it's sometime before SF because I'd love to watch all of them on blu before seeing the new flick.

Crumbs, besides QOS in March I've not touched a Bond film in well over a year. Bad times. Maybe.

Part is less compulsion yet in the past year with new jobs and all I've had little spare time for films and when I have it's whatever I've got recorded or in my to watch DVD pile. Had a hankering for Licence to Kill of late so I might buck the trend soon. Or try to get all watched by Skyfall.

Continued my pre-Skyfall Bondathon with GoldenEye. Solid entertainment, with an unmistakable identity in its first half or so. Kleinman's titles with Turner's song are one stylish combo. I think GoldenEye has one of the best sets of supporting characters - Ourumov, Mishkin, Zukovsky, Boris, Natalya, Onatopp. There's not much Russian about the characters and especially about the actors, but they're just awesome to watch. They more than make up for Brosnan's lack of presence (who is not bad). My main gripe this time around is the bland final third set in a most generic tropical location. I never get a Cuba vibe. While GoldenEye has an amusing script and manages to be relatively exciting to the end, it also foreshadows the creative fatigue of the rest of the Brosnan era.

I just gave AVTAK another try.

After the titles it just became background noise while I surfed. I finally turned it off at the point where Bond follws Stacey home from City Hall.

Sorry, AVTAK lovers, but I still can't excited about this one. Perhaps after I turn 57 I'll appreciate the gastropedic pacing and old world vs high tech motif, and cheer for Sir Roger and his stunt doubles (it's a toss-up who gets more screen time).

It would have been so much better if TD had been cast for this one (and someone - anyone - other than Tanya Roberts). With a young, fit villain like Christopher Walken, Roger's Bond had no right to win.

TLD blew AVTAK out of the water. I'll have to watch it, or LTK next.

Years ago, I used to hate AVTAK. Now I'm oddly fond of it.

This afternoon I watched CASINO ROYALE and QUANTUM OF SOLACE back to back. One of the better Bonds, one of the lesser Bonds. I'll spare everyone my views on CR, as I've expressed them many times before and they haven't really changed. Suffice it to say that I liked it pretty well today, a few problems aside.

QOS I'm all over the place about. I know I like Craig in it, and that I'll take it over any Brosnan Bond. On one hand I see it as a Gert Frobe-sized belly flop, and on the other I see some interesting ideas that aren't pursued enough. And it's so badly put together. It's like it's never an actual film, but a feature-length commercial for a film. The action sequences are almost all completely aimless, with no objective that lets us root for Bond. It's just quick cuts to get across the idea of action.

I'd say QOS is THE middling Bond film, but if I ranked them all I could see myself putting it below the halfway mark. In the end it feels like it's all for nothing. The last scene with Yusef is great. I wish the film had opened with the capture of Mr. White, and then.... [stuff happens here], Bond confronts Yusef. And then he goes on to take down Quantum. As it stands it's a bunch of running around to get to the resolution of the betrayal from the last movie concerning a love affair that was already badly written and unconvincing.

I'm thinking of a line from ED WOOD: "Crap wth a star." Maybe it's just crap, with a good Bond.

Maybe so. I do very much like Craig and some other elements of the film, but QUANTUM OF SOLACE is by far my least favorite Bond flick. I find it a real slog.

I will say that QUANTUM OF SOLACE does have two very good scenes, and they're back-to-back: Bond at Mathis' villa, and Bond and Mathis on the plane. I also really dig Bond's line early on in the film: "If they wanted his soul, they should have made a deal with a priest."

I couldn't call QOS my least favorite, but I can understand why it would be someone's least favorite. The combination of the plot being mangled and rather pointless along the editing style keep me from getting invested in anything that is going on.

I like how Sir Erica Ambler, Baronet put it: "A video game masquerading as narrative film."

But I know like it more than TOMORROW NEVER DIES and THE WORLD IS NOT ENOUGH.

It's the lack of fun and colour that seals the deal for me.

It's got Craig and not Brosnan, and that keeps it up above the Challenger Deep of Suck that I view TND to be.

I'm thinking of the cover name line when Mathis is dying. I can't recall the last time I really watched TND or TWINE all the way through without getting distracted and ending up just listening to it as I go on the computer or something. I really pretty much hate them both. Especially TND. I can't make it through GE either. Or DAD towards the end.

QOS is a misfire, but for me TWINE is just a major embarrassment of a Bond film. The only entertaining thing in that flick is the unintentional humor that comes out of Brosnan's Painface™.
