| Haven't seen much this year but was so impressed by KILL LIST that I watched it twice. Revisited SEXY BEAST and found it a far better film than I'd remembered (although the standout performance isn't Ben Kingsley's - it's Ian McShane's). Saw a wonderful microbudget comedy from a few years back called BIG DREAMS LITTLE TOKYO. Gave my FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE Blu-ray another spin in order to raise my excitement for SKYFALL and the Blu-ray box set. That's about it, I think. Haven't seen much yet, but what I've seen I've enjoyed. |

Of the post-DOCTOR ZHIVAGO stuff, I've only seen A PASSAGE TO INDIA, which didn't entirely endear itself to me, but was by no means a total loss, either. I wish he had been able to make his NOSTROMO adaptation. |

Of the post-DOCTOR ZHIVAGO stuff, I've only seen A PASSAGE TO INDIA, which didn't entirely endear itself to me, but was by no means a total loss, either. It's a flawed film, but still worthwhile in many respects. I just think by the time of DOCTOR ZHIVAGO, Lean's films began to get more focused on romance and spectacle alone, rather than the profound social commentary and spiritual subtext of LAWRENCE, THE SOUND BARRIER, BRIEF ENCOUNTERS, and GREAT EXPECTATIONS. Why I prefer PASSAGE TO INDIA to ZHIVAGO is that it's got more to it underneath. - Harmsway wrote:

Yes, that would have been something out of this world. |

| Here are all the 2012 films I've seen, going by the New York release rule (it had a theatrical run of a week or more in New York City in 2012).
THE AVENGERS BATTLE ROYALE BERNIE THE CABIN IN THE WOODS DAMSELS IN DISTRESS THE DARK KNIGHT RISES DARK SHADOWS DREDD HAYWIRE LET THE BULLETS FLY (Partial) THE MASTER MOONRISE KINGDOM ONCE UPON A TIME IN ANATOLIA (Partial) PROMETHEUS TO ROME WITH LOVE SINISTER THE WOMAN IN BLACK
MOONRISE KINGDOM is certainly the most impressive. I've cooled a bit toward THE MASTER quite a bit, but it's nevertheless more striking than many of the films on this list.
I outright hated BATTLE ROYALE, DARK SHADOWS, and DREDD.
I didn't make it through ONCE UPON A TIME IN ANATOLIA; either it really is as dull as I found it to be, or I just wasn't in the right frame of mind. I didn't "get" LET THE BULLETS FLY, which I chalk up to cultural differences, which is why I turned that one off partway through, too.
The rest end up in the middle somewhere. |

It only received an "official" release in the USA this year, which is why it's listed there. |

| Ah. Well, I can tell you that in 2001, it seemed very funny and radical. Ten years on, not so much. Context is everything. |

I wonder what that says about a blatant imitation like Hunger Games. Not much good I would guess. |
