I thought it worked well, right up until Craig started making cracks about his balls. They should have stuck with the carpet beater, though. |

As down as I am on Craig's tenure generally, I have to say that I agree that that scene worked. That scene as written by Fleming and depicted in the Barry Nelson version is rather hard to read or watch. It's unpleasant and tedious. At least the Craig version tried to lighten the mood. Bond is clearly trying to keep his spirits up with whatever remarks he can think of, and his response to Vesper's screams show he's being deeply affected by what's happening to him. I think Craig does well in the scene. Heck, scenes like that make me think Craig would do well in espionage/action type movies (more stuff like Layer Cake, which was quite good). Just not as James Bond. |

| Why should not a ball-whipping torture scene not be unpleasant? |

Tedious is probably a better term, though to be honest with you I'm not sure what prompted Fleming to write that scene in the first place. But in the novel and the Barry TV episode, the scene has a great deal of monotony about it. The Craig scene is more visceral, and if anything, more winch-inducing, but Bond's attempts at humor help to break the mood and actually make the scene more effective and less mind-numbing in the end. |

Less min-numbering, but I'd say as a consequence less effective. Torture is slow, calculated, monotonous, and designed to wear the victim out through repetition, not an episode of BEAVIS AND BUTT-HEAD. |

| I wouldn't be surprised if the quip about balls was there to brighten the scene so that the film didn't get a harder rating. |

I can imagine that was the case, too. |

| Surely some of Connery style wit could have eased the tension slightly without it turning into a joke, if its inclusion was for classification purposes. |

Agreed. Too bad it wasn't done more artfully. |
