Unusually great moments from lesser films are more interesting, in my opinion.
I agree with you, Klown. Check out the OP. I bet you haven't seen Unearthly Stranger.

Usually they're there for an actor's ego rather than to serve the film.
To quote a cliché, 'the eyes are the window the soul.' No cinematic technique is no more soul probing, and telling of character and intent, the the close-up. That is unique to cinema.
James Cagney was the master of utterly owning the close-up.

Greatest moment yes, but BIGGER THAN LIFE a "lesser film"?

Maybe he meant lesser known? I dunno.
FRENZY is a film I have a lot of problems with. It is a lesser film. From it's grating performance from John Finch, it's anachronistic portrayal of early 70s London, unworthy script, bland Ron Goodwin score, there are vignettes of greatness in it.
This is one:
I walked past there that house the other day.

Bigger than Life hasn't dated well, at all. I love In a Lonely Place though...

Sharky's 'Frenzy' scene is an excellent choice. I wonder how many takes that took?
For me, Hitchcock began to lose it after after 'Psycho'. He had one hell of a run though, probably unparalleled.
(Incidentally for some reason I can't use any of tag functions anymore, so my posts will probably make even less sense than usual.)

I'm slightly out of the ordinary in my appreciating of Hitch, my favorite of his is still "The 39 steps". I know most people don't have much of his earlier work in their top three.

One for the Hitchcock thread I think.
My God, I'm turning into a mod.

Well no one said that every single scene posted here had to be technically brilliant. :)

I'm not even sure that moment *is* the greatest moment of BIGGER THAN LIFE. It's certainly the apex of the film, but there is a great deal to admire about it. BIGGER THAN LIFE is one of the best cinematic commentaries on the values of the 1950s I've ever seen.
