Who is this hack playing Holmes?
And Lucy Lui as Watson? Come on. What a load of shit.
I'll be checking it out this Fall, just for a good laugh. I imagine it'll last as long as Rob Schneider's sitcom.

I'll be very surprised if it lasts until winter.

Sounds like a typical police procedural. If it weren't based on Sherlock Holmes, you wouldn't be able to pick it apart from every other police procedural out there. But they're in vogue now, so this obviously needed a hook to get the studio interested; otherwise, they might as well have called it "Asshole Detective", and it wouldn't have made any difference.. I'm willing to bet it will end up like "NCIS", where the characters just stand around recapping what they did before the ad break for any late audiences.

Indeed. What a pathetic attempt to cash-in on the BBC series.
I didn't really care for the UK "Sherlock" episodes that I've watched, but this shit makes that look like a masterpiece of a series.

"Joan Watson"
It must've taken a while to come up with that one.

It's all quite bone-headed, the way they went about re-imagining Holmes.
Holmes is a consultant for Scotland Yard sent to NYC, while Watson is his "sober companion", yet she accompanies him during investigations. Then, there's that random, hispanic, 'playin' by his own rules' NYPD detective thrown into the mix.
I'd rather watch those Holmes shows on PBS.

Cumberbatch's Sherlock comes across as an asshole because he has a need to rationalise every relationship he has, like he is trying to break human emotion down into a mathematical equation, like the time he accidentally embarrassed Molly in front of everyone at the Christmas party. It does make for an interesting character, even if it's not a straight adaptation of the source material.
Miller's Sherlock comes across as an asshole because ... he can be an asshole? There's a scene in that preview where the detective challenges him on his assessment of the scrime scene, so he ducks under the fridge and pulls out another piece of glass, proving himself right. That's not interesting. That's just Sherlock Holmes being a dick, which isn't interesting at all.

Saw something about this a few weeks ago. Jesus, what a stupid F***IN' idea. Between this and the impending remake of THE MUNSTERS starring Jerry O'Connell as Herman.
Network television is a giant pile of shit. I think American television in the last decade is the best it has ever been, but ONLY on cable. Fuck the networks. They have to pander to morons.

I watched the "encore" presentation last night, mostly because I was bored.
The show was probably at its best when Holmes was actually solving the crime. I didn't like him in the bits in between putting his observational skills to the test, though. I did, however, like the way he was played as having so much going on inside his head at any one time that he has to blurt things out so that they don't overwhelm him. At the same time, the show needs more for the audience to see Holmes making his observation - the BBC version would have given the audience more to work with when he was noting Watson's parking ticket.
As for Watson, I do like Lucy Liu, but I felt that changing the character to a woman was totally unnecessary, and probably made so that the show would appeal to American audiences. She did seem to exist purely so that Holmes could show off his deductive skills, but as the pilot opened with her meeting Holmes for the first time, it was very much an introduction for the audiences. That said, I hope that she gets better.
The problem with Watson extends to the rest of the cast: the elite homicide squads are depicted as being total idiots, completely mis-reading a crime scene so that Holmes can show up and point out how wrong they are. Spotting the blood drop in the boot print was perhaps something they might have missed, but the scene in the kitchen with the two glasses was something that the police should have caught.
I did suppress a shudder when the words "serial killer" were mentioned, mostly because almost all pilots for crime shows deal with them, since they're a big, obvious threat that put the characters under the spotlight. But in the end, I liked the way the plot played out, even fif the audience was given no real clues to solve the mystery on their own. I think crime fiction is at its strongest when the audience can solve the crime one minute (or one page) before the characters do.

Elementary is okay as a crime show, but it's not Sherlock Holmes. The character here simply isn't clever enough. He doesn't see things the rest of us miss - he states the obvious. He's far more aware of emotions and what people think about him.
'Perception' is better.
This Holmes isn't a genius, he's not super-clever, or super-observant. He's just slightly above averagely intelligent. Whenever he does make some brilliant deduction, it's only because he's seen something that the audience haven't been shown - which is cheating. Breaks one of Chesterton's cardinal rules about crime writing.
The BBC's Sherlock is infinitely superior. I love it. Everything is put in front of you, and it's up to you to see it and put it together. Exactly what Holmes should be about. And Watson isn't the bumbling Hardwicke - he's actually intelligent enough that the friendship with Holmes is plausible.

It's for a mainstream American audience. The perception is probably that making him too smart will turn off the yokels. Or maybe the people writing the show aren't bright enough.

I don't mean to be patronising, rather that the networks would prefer a dumbed down show.
