I think it's more important that a theme be produced early enough for Thomas Newman to work it into the wider score. Newman recently said that he's only really coming up with ideas at the moment, and Adele - assuming she gets the theme - apparently returned to the studio a few weeks beforehand, so hope springs eternal.

That was the problem with Die Another Day, You Know My Name and Another Way to Die - they were written separately from their films, and so David Arnold never really had the chance to integrate them into his score. They could have appeared on a Madonna/Chris Cornell/Jack White record (and they did) and you would never know they were James Bond themes unless you were told.

As a matter of fact Cornell did collaborate with Arnold on YKMN, explaining its appearance throughout the score (i.e. "African Rundown", "I'm The Money", "Blunt Instrument", "Dinner Jackets").

Well, it's been a while since I've seen the film. And of the three themes, YKMN is easily the best. But I still feel my point is valid - Newman needs to be able to work the SKYFALL theme into score.

It's very refreshing that I started a thread that opened up your minds and created an intellectually stimulating discussion among y'all.

I agree with what Prisoner Monkeys is saying, it would be great to have a re-occuring theme throughout Skyfall. CR benefitted from this. A memorable theme sticks with you and conjures up memories of the film, much as the OHMSS theme brings to mind Lazenby's downhill descent from Piz Gloria.

In regards to Newman and the theme song, has Newman ever written a theme or a pop tune? It would be interesting to see if he is capable of making that crossover.

Not confirmed, but based on the wry comments from Adele and those involved with the film's production, as well as the fact that she's signed to Columbia Records, makes me think she has to be the overwhelming favorite at this point.

A smart bet, especially considering every other Skyfall secret so far has been telegraphed far in advance. Practically every rumour has been correct (not the ridiculous ones, of course).

Wow, 41 years later, and she still nails that song. She has such total ownership of the vocal treatment, I can't imagine anyone else being even brave enough to try and cover her stylings . Another singer would have to tailor the vocals to their own delivery, I think, if only to avoid unflattering comparisons.

I think Dame Shirley might be among the greatest female vocalists of all-time, maybe the greatest, although there are plenty of other worthy candidates, but she's definitely my favourite. She's done a superb job of keeping her pipes and vocal muscles in shape over the years. Bravo! That Bond song gives me chills, more than any song ever recorded, especially the eerie opening.

She does weird things with the vowels in her songs, and it's getting weirder by every year. She's starting to sound like a drag queen impersonating Shirley Bassey., if you get what I mean.

Well, Turner wasn't that far removed from relevancy when she did GOLDENEYE back in '95. You're asking for the producers to bring back Shirley Bassey after a 33 year hiatus.

It's been my observation over the years that some fans simply get over-nostalgic for certain things they wish to happen without fully thinking through the potential ramifications. These songs aren't just pieces of music; they are attempts by the studio to garner publicity, drive traffic to the theater and earn money. It seems a bit of a stretch to me to believe that anyone in charge with even the slightest bit of intelligence is going to pick Shirley Bassey when they've got Adele and/or MUSE waiting in the wings wanting to do a theme/title song. A Shirley Bassey theme song will get no rotation on any Top 40 radio station, might not even get picked up by Adult Contemporary stations, and no music or pop-culture/entertainment network will book Bassey as a guest on their shows.

It's just not going to happen, nor should it. It's best to look forward and move on from this idea.

Heck, Madonna did a Bond theme song.
