Anyway, I don't doubt that Matthew Weiner's taking the lib-left party line in Mad Men; I just hope he's not leading Don Draper down that well-trodden road of redemption and learning. I've heard that story too many times before.
I think that would be a colossal fuck-up. To end it with Don walking off into the sunset a new man absolved of all his sins would be a bit disingenuous to the rest of the series. Based on how season seven has meandered around Don's arc, I would honestly be surprised and even somewhat disappointed if it ended with Don being anything but some form of annihilated. |

| I can see Draper at least try to become a better man at the end, but it's a too little too late kind of deal. Whatever changes he's personally gone through isn't going to make much of a difference. He'll simply have to live with the decisions he made, make due with what he has but in a pathetic way. |

| Rise of Porn 'Stache, Fall of Don's Penis.
As in Don's penis will likely just fall off his crotch at the end. Can't imagine fucking a gloomy waitress in the back of a diner is going to do him any good. |

| She looks cheaper than a hundred dollar's worth. Then again, he wrote a million dollar check to Megan, so I guess he's just throwing it everywhere. |

I don't want George Brandis to know. But I know there are people out there - and I utterly condemn them - who use a VPN while downloading torrents. One could watch the new episodes of Mad Men in such a manner. |

| Welp. Mad Men is over now. - Spoiler:
I liked the finale for the most part, but I had a couple small nags:
Don. Don! I don't think he earned that Coke ad. I guess the ambiguity makes a little less Disney, but after everything we saw Don do over the course of the past couple episodes, I had a hard time processing Don going back to McCann to write one of the greatest commercials ever. I think it would've been much more ballsy for Don to jump off the cliff at the end, though that probably would've been a shitty ending that everyone would've hated.
And I didn't buy Peggy and Stan. I get that there's been some vague form of sexual tension there before, and I get that the two of them together probably makes sense. But I didn't really feel like we deserved to see it happen so quickly and the way that it did. I'm happy for them, though.
But I'm glad Roger is happy-ish. And Joan. And Pete. I think Pete is really the only character to have really, truly developed over the course of the series, even if it was a bit forced and crammed into the last few episodes of the series. (Sally developed too, but I'm not talking about her character!!! Jk. She did. She was one of the only characters I ever rooted for on this show.)
That said, I was really hoping for a time-jump to the '80s. I need to see 1985 Don Draper marketing Ataris and CD players. |

Yeah, I dunno how I feel about the finale. The hippie commune stuff felt awkward. Kinda thought D.D. should've offed himself.
But I did think the ambiguity of the ending was interesting. I initially interpreted it as "attaining real happiness" vs. "hokey soulless commercial flogging sugary piss under the guise of bringing you happiness" or something along those lines. Then again, Mad Men never really seemed like a critique of the advertising industry.
Other than the forced Peggy/Beardo romance, I liked how the supporting ensemble's storylines were wrapped up.
When you've stuck with a show for so long, it's often hard to be completely satisfied with how things wrap up. That said, despite some hangups with the ending, I enjoyed the final season for the most part. |

| Not sure how to do spoiler tags, so spoilers below:
*********
Awesome scenes between Don and Betty, Pete and Peggy and Joan and Roger. Pete's story works well for me, and Roger's works because he ended up with Julia Ormond. The hippy stuffed worked, based solely on Don's last smile, but it's not what I wanted in a finale - something more needed to happen with Peggy. I don't mind her romance with Stan, as it was touched on throughout the series, but I wanted something to rival The Suitcase ep in Season 4.
If Don didn't end up like the titles sequence suggested, I wanted to see him back in office, doing what he does best. Or an ending like the end of an earlier season, with a shot of Joan, Roger, Pete, Don and Peggy becoming partners of a new company, in a new office.
Really, really happy with Pete's story. Moments worked, but other moments didn't quite hit the spot. |

| Weiner revealed what the ending meant. I liked all of the finale except the inclusion of that Coke commercial. I don't like what it implies. I was hoping Don would leave Madison Ave and find his own peace. Going back, it suggests to me that no matter how much drama Don goes through, he is always going to revert back to his old self and not learn anything.
Aside from that, I really did like everything else that happened with the characters. Had the Coke ad been cut out, I'd say it's nearly perfect. |

| The show has always been pretty cynical, so having gone through 7 seasons and ending the way it did, it fits perfectly in my opinion. |

| Weiner actually meant for it to be uplifting and have Don truly changed for all time, I just don't think it gels given his history. That's just my view. |

| How did Don truly change though?
I read it as him finally figuring out a way to recycle the counterculture into something he could sell (and thus understand). |

| He goes through his breakthrough when hugging that bald guy, finally finding his own peace while at the same time realizing a great ad that reflects on what he went through. |

| Loved the episode where Don forces Roger to take 23 flights of stairs just for propositioning Betty. Some creative cruelty for a change. |

Mad Men is the only series off the top of my head that has maintained its high calibre throughout its entire run. Oh perhaps The Crown (so far) and Fawlty Towers. Everything else loses steam, or never quite reached the same peaks as Mad Man to begin with: House of Cards lost it after one season and one episode, Suits is a Mad Men knock off with soap-operatic drama (which makes it more disappointing because the groundwork is interesting), Black Sails should have become more engrossing as the seasons progressed, but I couldn't care to return to it a little into the third season... |

| See if it's the same on Netflix Belgium. For the UK, only the first seven episodes of the final season have been uploaded. Not sure if this is the streaming equivalent of a clerical error or something to do with the notorious AMC/Lionsgate decision to break S7 into two to extend DVD sales and ad revenue.
