Wrapped up GALACTICA 1980. Christ Almighty.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YK7gisWWwb4#t=35m53s

The Starbuck episode was the only decent one, and it's basically just a "stuck on a planet surface with the enemy and you gotta become friends to survive" episode with a dream framing.

But it did have Captain Dirk. He has more charisma in a spent cigar than the cardboard cutouts played by Adam-12 and Barry Van Dyke.

Robyn Douglass was hot, though.

The Galactica sets were shyte.

Yeah, most fans of Old BSG count "Return of Starbuck" as a real BSG episode and leave off the framing sequence.

story goes is that as 1980 went on BVD and other are gradually getting riled by how stupid the series is and the writing, the characters and were planning to go on strike...just they chose to go on strike after the Starbuck episode (The Day they Kidnapped Cleopatra or something). Sort of sums them and the series up really.

Still gets me that Jeremy Brett was in it. Lynch I could understand but not Lorne Greene. He more or less begged Larson to be in it when he heard. Hatch and Lockhart never knew Benedict did it until much later.

Hatch was going to count the episode almost as part of BSG78 for his Second Coming thing (Starbuck's missing still or has become a 'Being of Light).

Stopped reading by now but stone it, personally I don't count BSG80's Starbuck episode much as 78's canon. 80 in its entirety never happened. If anything from the show happened it might be Starbuck being stranded but minus the Godchild or whatever Zee was and that Angela woman (usually cropped up in Larson's productions, notably winding Magnum up on a couple of occasions). Apollo, Sheba and the others bar Boomer look like they did somewhere between Hand of God and Galactica Discovers Earth.

The Cylons as human thing started here oddly...

The BSG wiki pages for 80 are revealing in how Larson tried to make it a good show but just gave up from the looks of it.

Still, some say that life here began out there...far far out there

the 'in company' thing (bootleg, bootlegged)

Watching THE PLAN. After S2 and before S3.

Rather dull clip show that fills in holes I've never really cared about. It was probably economical considering it has so much old footage. Not totally worthless, but I wouldn't miss it if it weren't made. The attack sequence is nicely done.

I would have preferred a Final Five film. Now THAT'S an area worth exploring.

BTW, is it just me who gets the feeling that the show is saying that the Twelve Colonies deserved to be nuked because of "sin" or whatever? Instead of 9/11 In Space, it's Noah's Flood In Space. Disturbing if it's the case.

Yeah, I got that hardcore but only in the final episode of BSG and in THE PLAN, where it came out of nowhere so they could justify the themes they wanted to explore in CAPRICA.

When I watched it with my girlfriend and we got to the final episode her reaction was "I thought you said this show was based off Mormon religion, not Amish!"

I thought the new show ditched the Mormon nonsense. But then I watched 10 minutes of the Plan so who knows.

Well the whole thirteenth tribe that set up somewhere else and how the remnants of the twelve tribes must journey to meet them in the promised land.

That's the twelve tribes of Israel who were scattered in the diaspora, and in Mormonism the thirteenth tribe is the Native Americans who Jesus appeared to after his ascension to Heaven and thus America is the new promised land of Man, replacing Canaan.

They should have landed in Missouri.

The Twelve Colonies were in a lot of ways a better civilization than what we have. Hell, they actually have full gender equality, though not after Lee's little caveman plan. Also, it's quite clear that the Colonials must have died pretty quickly. Hera is the only one to pass on genes, and she died as a young woman. And then they decry our modern civilization. That's the kind of hypocritical coffee shop rambling that I can't stand.

I think there is a balance between Roddenberry's vision TNG-on and the anti-humanism of nuBSG.

Decided to give the old 70s show another go, maybe this time go beyond episode five. laugh It's enjoyable 70s space opera with a good budget for its day, but the "fun for the whole family" approach just feels so glaringly wrong for what the show is all about. Was it imposed by the network as a way to reach a broader audience? It's the only thing I'm not too keen on.

Currently at the fourth episode, "they're just slow... doesn't mean they're stupid". Lol at 70s very special message from network TV.

"Gun on Ice Planet Zero, Parts I and II" is a highlight of the show's run.

Another good one is "The Man With Nine Lives", where Fred Astaire plays the same character he played in THE TOWERING INFERNO, but in outer space.

And if you haven't seen THE TOWERING INFERNO, see it.

never really twigged Astaire doing his Inferno role in BSG78. Still, you have the Towering Inferno rip-off in "Fire in Space".

'78 seemed to be amongst the last things some great actors or famous actors did. Paul Fix, Wilfrid Hyde-White (though he did the abysmal second season of Buck Rogers after), Lorne Greene, Lloyd Bridges (that transition from serious to silly), etc.

I do look forward to Lloyd Bridges' appearance. I've seen THE TOWERING INFERNO and even then I'm still shocked to know Fred Astaire of all people ended up doing TV space opera. I guess a lot of people really thought this show was going to be HUGE like Star Wars before it ended up getting cancelled so quickly.

It didn't do badly ratings wise from what I've read, something like it being in the top 10 right to the end. If this had kicked off, as Larson had tried earlier, as Adam's Ark then things might've...well, would've been quite different.

And Bridges doesn't do badly. Living Legend tend to be the best episodes.

That's what I heard, hence I'm eager to see it. If not low ratings I guess it was big budget vs acceptable ratings. It looks like they really put more money onto the f/x compared to TREK which was only 9 years before, I guess it took it's toll. Explains why TNG opted for video tape post-production so that it would be much cheaper to go around than using complex effects via optical printers.

Sure was budget. Hence perhaps why later episodes, the bottle episodes, were in some respects better. Compared to new Galactica I suppose the '78 series is a joke. Apparently BSG was slotted in after Mork & Mindy or something late on and that hindered it. I forget what exactly was said by Larson on the DVD. Lockhart, Benedict and so forth seemed surprised when they went on hiatus and heard they weren't coming back which seems at odds with the fact Hand of God was done with cancellation foreknowledge.

Ignore my waffle. I look forward to the views you have.

Been watching some early S1 nuBSG episodes. Frakkin hell, it holds up so damn well. I miss having a new space show to watch, especially a good one. Never got around to seeing BLOOD AND CHROME, so before that I might just finish the original series first, then resume nuBSG, even plow through CAPRICA to see how that holds up.

Not that it matters, but scuttlebutt is that the 'movie' of BSG78 is being released on blu-ray at some point soon (at least, there's cover art). The hope is that it gets the remastered treatment like TNG but it's not hopeful. General consensus is that if the effects are untouched they'll look horrific in blu-ray.

And that's before we get to Maren Jensen.

I believe BSG was edited onto film, so they don't have to redo everything like they did for TNG (which was edited on videotape). The same thing was done with TOS, as all episodes were edited on film. Here's how an effect from that show looks like in HD, a simple shot of the Enterprise.

Battlestar Galactica - Page 5 Thetholianwebhd0003

Given how BSG was made a decade later, I'm sure the effects will look cleaner given that optical printers got better over the years.

Ah, I see. Well, let's hope (or I hope being the flag-waver) it looks alright. Though I'm more likely to ever get TNG if I go the blu-ray route.

Like with MAD MEN, I only just realized that the 2004 show was shot digitally after watching the first season on blu-ray. Most obvious way to tell is the jump from the mini-series, which is littered with film grain, and then after "33" it's clean digital. And I thought the whole show was shot on film, but I guess that's how good the DP is and perhaps the fact that I was watching the show the first time on an old TV, not being able to see the difference until now on an HDTV.

Just wanted to let that out. After having shot still photography in both film and digital throughout the years I've become even more and more interested in the technical specs of motion picture. Trying to find out what film stock was used for what show, movie, ect. I might not ever try making a film of my own, I just don't feel I have high enough aspirations for that, but I am interested in studying the process.
