It plays to a very limited audience, 99% of whom are not going to be seeing a Bond movie. I guess that's also why my first choice for SKYFALL, Christy Lane, America's #1 Christian artist (and a very beautiful 68 years old), was rejected by EON.

I like it. I really like it.

I can live with it. I hate those backing vocals and I think they've gone over the top shoehorning in the word 'Skyfall', but it could have been worse.

After 5 hours of sleep, I've come to the conclusion that it's a big disappointment. It's alright and Adele does sell it, but it could have been so much more. The vocals don't really go anywhere, and she never has a chance to truly let-rip, as she's proved she can do. The backing vocals are wank (sound like a school assembly - is this the same guy who arranged the wonderful backing vocals in Rolling in the Deep?), the Grade 1 piano recital at the beginning is dull, the songwriters must have been on valium, lyrics are primary school level, and the orchestration too simple. It could have done with a quasi-baroque harpsichord solo (the song's harmonies and bass line remind me somewhat of Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor) or some contemporary electronics. It needs an edge and something unpredictable to hold the listener's interest. I feel like I'm always two or three steps ahead of it as it's playing (doesn't help that it's so damn ponderous), whereas I should be the one playing catch-up.

I still love the "Are your loving arms" bit, though. The string arrangement reminds me of what Carl Bagge did on Lana Del Ray's "Off to the Races", in a good way..

I was expecting something great. An instant classic. Instead we got a middle-of-the-pack, somewhat generic, flawed Bond song.

I still like it, but can't help feel it was a missed opportunity, and imagine what I would've done instead

Exactly. It's nearly very good. I can't work out why they've wasted Adele's voice - she can do much better than this.

Who is this "they" that you are referring to? Adele and Paul Epworth wrote the song; Epworth and JAC Redford arranged it.
