Baird was one of the strongest points about CR to me. At least that's my opinion. Heinous director, excellent editor.

Nolan cuts less frequently than most? Man, most of the time, Nolan cuts his action sequences into an incomprehensible hash.

Nolan is getting lots better and learning, but the way he cut the fights in BB was pretty messy/abrupt, destroying any choreography that may have actually been staged, almost like what I remember as horrid about BOURNE ID.

Has anybody done a fan edit of CR to cut all the drag out of the card game? Seems to me that with all the people who liked it and still thought it overlong, that somebody would have tried tweaking by now.

I'd offer, but a) don't have the equipment and b) my 'cut' would require substituting different actors, different dialog, different situations ... it would be a MUCH different movie.

I don't think the card game drags, so...

Yeah, the card game is fine for me. I actually like that part of the film pretty well, how it breaks up the game and everything. I also like that it focused less on the game, and more on Bond's rivalry with LeChiffre.

Trev, what actors would you substitute?

In my 1981 dream version of CR, I'd have Dalton along with Rachel Ward as Vesper. Not sure on LeChiffre, but Michel Galabru as Mathis, and Powers Boothe as Felix. And no M in the movie.

I still would have liked Clive Owen, or even Brosnan (as his FINAL film) but not do it as an origins story, and have a grownup woman like Catherine McCormick as Vesper (or at least as Moneypenny, just want her in a bond film in the worst way.)

If it was going to have to be the origins story, then somebody like Cavill, I guess.

Going back to when I read CR as a teen, I always saw Jacqueline Bisset as Vesper and Orson Welles as LeChiffre (even before I realized it was the character he played in the 67 version.) And while I had been indoctrinated in Conneryism since before the age of 4, I could've easily seen Eric Braeden as Bond in the years leading up to the wished-for DecadeOfDalton, starting with Tim in FYEO.

It's funny you mentioning Powers Boothe, an actor I've admired ever since SOUTHERN COMFORT, because when I think of the mop of hair for Leiter, it makes me think of his SOUTHERN costar, Keith Carradine.
