I think regardless of whether you like her or loathe her, she's easily the most interesting artist to come around in a while. Video Games is pretty well regarded, and rightfully so. Any thoughts on the rest of her output? Or Ms Del Rey herself?

I would probably say I'm in a similar spot. Big fan of the three songs you mentioned ("Let me fuck you hard in the pouring rain" was a way better lyric), fans of parts of her other stuff - usually the lyrics, or parts of the lyrics, sometimes her vocals - but its a lot shallower and the album is basically 13 tracks that re-hash either "Video Games" or "Born To Die".
To use an example, I like her vocals on "Million Dollar Man" but it is probably the most trite and generic song on the album. I like the bridges to "Summertime Sadness" and "Dark Paradise" but not much else.
Still, she's interesting. And bangable.
Have you listened to "Ride" and the "Paradise Edition" tracks Ambler? I like "Ride", I haven't heard the rest of the 'Paradise Edition' tracks. I've stumbled on some unreleased stuff on youtube, they're a bit of a different sound altogether, even though they meander a bit.

I'm not sure if she is musically relevant, but her path is more interesting and personal than say Lady Gaga's.

Lady Gaga's star sure has dropped quickly in the past year, hasn't it? She was supposed to be the 'next big thing'.

Nothing there that matches her early work for me, Vesper. She really needs to take some time out to consider her next move. I suspect she would be a better writer than songwriter.
Interesting, from wiki:
Quote :
Del Rey told Vogue Australia that she is interested in working for the movie industry, stating "When I was starting, I had a vision of being a writer for film and that's what I am doing now. I'm so happy. Hopefully I will branch into film work and stay there. That will be my happy place. I'd like to stay in one place for a long time."

One thing I did like about her album. The track 'Radio' is a horrible saccharine sweet concoction that would be loved by FM if it weren't for the chorus:
Quote :
Now my life is sweet like cinnamon Like a fucking dream I'm living in Baby love me cause I'm playing on the radio (how do you like me now?)
She has a knack for subversion.
Apparently her latest E.P. has a lyric "My pussy tastes like pepsi cola" or something along those lines...

Nice article. I'll agree with that.
Do you think the 'anti-feminist' tag is directed at her confected persona, her songs themselves, or the notion that keeps popping up in her music that a woman can be self-destructivelyy consumed by emotion/desire?
Surprised how good her vocal is on this given it's a live performance, makes me buy the 'stage fright' argument:

BTW, did you see the shots she did for GQ Magazine in Britain?
I hadn't, but I likey. They also helped me finally get a mate who I suspect of being gay to admit she's bangable (I still think he's gay, but I won the argument).
I know she's said she can't act, but watching her videos I think she could probably do a good job with the right director.

I suppose compared to most Scottish cuisine cooze would taste like pepsi?
Erica Ambler wrote:
Coming back to Vesper's question as to why Del Rey is disliked by feminists, I think it's because so many of her songs deal with female submission.
Well, Off To The Races is basically about how she's too much of a slag to expect any better than what she's got, so she should totally devote herself to him. I can see how that would piss off even the stiletto feminists out there.
Off To The Races has been getting a lot of radio play here lately, I liked it before but I'd definitely subscribe that after Video Games and Born To Die it's probably the best track on the album. I think I'd probably place National Anthem and Blue Jeans under that. Besides that you get rather lightweight pop variants of those same tracks like Summertime Sadness, Dark Paradise and Radio etc. As pop songs? They work. But there isn't as much depth to them as those top three tracks.
I like "Ride", "Afraid" and "Velvet Crowbar" insofar that they at least have some semblence of depth and insight. Closer to what Video Games did than "I got that summertime, summertime sadness/S-s-summertime summertime sadness"

There's either something very wrong with him or something very wrong with her.
