Paint A Vulgar Picture
The amount of arguments I've had with Lazers, who continues to insist that The Smiths were better than The Beatles for the main reason that the Smiths never put a single bad track out there, started on a high and finished on one, etc. To be fair, that discography by no means makes a liar of him and I'd recommend it all to anybody.
Ditto. The Smiths were certainly almost up there with The Beatles in terms of the quality of their output. They were almost the last of the genuinely great British guitar pop bands - The Stone Roses being the very last.
I'm disappointed that the latest rumours about The Smiths reuniting (rumours that turn up with the tedious inevitability of an unloved season, as Morrissey might have put it had the MOONRAKER script not done so first) have proven false. No surprise there, I suppose, but I did wonder whether the success of the Roses' reunion might have caused Morrissey and Marr to reconsider reforming, if only for a short tour.

Killing Joke - MMXII (2012)
Best thing they've done in years. What was Jaz turning up in the Western Sahara all about? Some sort of PR stunt or living with Bedouin tribes to research for his latest television score?

Listening to Weather Report's Heavy Weather. One of the landmark jazz fusion records.
Jaco Pastorius was a genius and one of my heroes. He made the electric bass sing.

Loving it, although I was initially both underwhelmed and deeply baffled (albeit that this is not an exactly an immediately accessible album). I'm not a huge My Bloody Valentine fan, although I liked bits of Loveless as well as Kevin Shields' work on the LOST IN TRANSLATION soundtrack.
My first reaction to m b v was one of: "Pah! This is a case of the Emperor's new clothes. Anyone can churn out this kind of random noise." But then, for whatever reason, the album started to grow on me considerably.
There's some extraordinary stuff here. Wonder 2, in particular, needs to be heard to be believed. I'm also enjoying She Found Now, Is This and Now, New You and In Another Way.
I'd be very interested to read your thoughts on this album and on the band in general. Are you a fan?

New Order - Lost Sirens. Surprisingly good.
Grateful Dead - American Beauty. Great songwriting and superb musicianship. Who could ask for anything more?

How good? I was/am a diehard fan, but this release passed me by and smelt slightly of barrel-scraping in much the same way other pointless compilations of tossed-aside material usually do (Morrissey's Swords, take a bow). I may eventually catch up with Lost Sirens though, maybe if the price comes down on it.

I was also a huge New Order and Joy Division fan (for more than twenty years - first got into them round about the release of Technique, and I went to see them at Reading in 1993), but my fandom took a serious blow with the release of Waiting For the Sirens' Call, which to my mind is absolutely abysmal (I like Get Ready, though). Bad Lieutenant didn't float my boat either, and I sorta tuned out after that (although I quite liked Freebass' album It's a Beautiful Life, albeit that, being a Stone Roses obsessive, I bought it mainly because Mani plays on it).
So how good is Lost Sirens, you ask? Well, an awful lot better than a mini-album of songs recorded during the making of Waiting For the Sirens' Call has any right to be. I haven't listened to it all that much, but there are at least three or four excellent tracks here: "I'll Stay With You", "Sugarcane", "Californian Grass" and, especially, the lovely "Recoil". This isn't earthshattering stuff, but it's surprisingly decent and certainly much better than what was released in 2005. I guess these songs are also given an added poignancy as it seems unlikely that there will be any future New Order recordings with Peter Hook.

Hmmm.... I want to like this album but so far it's doing nothing for me. I wish Marr would resume his songwriting partnership with Morrissey (I know, I know, I'm a Smiths saddo, but, hey, a guy can dream), or, failing that, reform Electronic with Bernard Sumner (their 1991 self-titled album is one of the best records of its decade).

I think it might grow on you, Loomster. I'm the opposite about Electronic. Considering the legends involved, I've always felt it was less than the some of its parts. Very underwhelming - especially Getting Away With It.

As a lifelong fan, I can honestly say I'd never want Moz and Marr to reunite... it just wouldn't be the same. Right now, I'm just hoping that Moz can rope in both yet another new record label and the quoted-as-up-for-it Tony Visconti to produce the ready-for-ages new material and get an album to happen.
