The newest entry in the James Bond film franchise continues to exceed all expectations and blow the doors off of the series’ previous records. Today, Skyfall moved into the number ten spot on the all-time worldwide box office list, replacing Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
The exact box office totals are not yet officially tabulated, but they will place Bond’s current receipts at somewhere in the neighborhood of $1.045 billion. Yesterday, Skyfall opened in China to enormous numbers, and it should finish its run as the seventh highest-grossing movie in history, bumping The Dark Knight Rises down to number eight on the all-time list.
It’s hard to know precisely what combination of factors led to this unprecedented success for Skyfall. Bond has always been popular, but nothing remotely like this has ever happened before. Granted, this is one of the series’ finest entries, rivaling 2006′s Casino Royale for the title of best of the franchise in the opinion of many fans and critics. And it has one of the best, most fun villains in recent memory. Perhaps it is also helped by the fact there are similarities between its story and key plot points and the phenomenally successful Batman trilogy that just wrapped up.
The combination of a great film from a great director, with great characters and performances in a great story that reminds viewers of some other widely popular films, is no doubt proving to be a winning combination. But does that really fully explain how the film is on its way to nearly doubling the box office performance of the previous franchise-best tally? It seems to me there is something else at work, but it is elusive and hard to pinpoint.
For whatever reasons, it’s clear the movie resonates with audiences and is the most popular of the Bond franchise to date, so the recipe is sure to be repeated when Daniel Craig returns for the next outing. |

| Very impressive indeed. The author, however, seems to be neglecting inflation adjustments when stating SF is annihilating all other Bond entries at the box office (it will beat TB by less than 100 mill) and that it is nearly doubling the second place Bond film at the box office (this is risible).
These writers are getting paid good money. The least they could do is use a little common sense. |

No surprise, really. The third film in Connery and Moore's series helped each actor really catapult the role into the public consciousness; and to a lesser extent TWINE as well. But I think it also comes down to the actor and the producers...by the third film, you've had enough practice to see what works and what doesn't. Based on cinematic trends and forecast models from 1964-65, and 1977-1979, I am confidently predicting that SHATTERHAND (aka Bond 24) will be the biggest grossing film of the Craig series, and will become 5th "highest grossing film of all time". |

If $1.1 billion is possible, then so is $1.2 billion! And Shatterhand sounds like an excellent Bond title. |

Looks like it will settle nicely at #007 when all is said and done. |
