That said, I have a soft spot for MR. Lonsdale's Drax is a really good villain, I enjoy the plot, there are some genuinely funny moments, the stuff in Amazonia is terrific, and the film carries a fairly high level of suspense right up until Q's "I think he's attempting reentry!" line.[/quote]
That's what irritates me about Moonraker, there is so much good in there, it looks beautiful through out much of it and the plot is fine so I have no idea why they decided to go all silly buggers with it. Dammit, just play it straight. I wouldn't even say I hate the movie and I can watch it anytime I just hate it as a Bond film.

Aye, Hilly. MR was my first cinematic Bond experience. A different world in 1979. |

| I tend to agree with the above. I love Moonraker, and wish they'd cut back on the gags because there's a lot of good stuff in it. But MR isn't trying to be FRWL. PK and Sarai, check out the MR anniversary thread from earlier this year, when some of us offer a reflective review of the film. Feel free to write and post yours! https://bondandbeyond.forumotion.com/t3538-1979-2019-take-a-giant-step-for-mankind - BI wrote:
- By YOLT, Connery was tired of playing Bond ... he was vocal in interviews about the length of time it took to make and then promote each film, leading to difficulty for him with finding other work (which in turn made him fear typecasting). Broccoli and Saltzman convinced him to stay on by increasing his fee.
Maybe those who criticise Craig for similar behaviour would do well to remember the above, but I digress ... Maybe... if it's an isolated facet of Craig's shortcomings. Consider his being miscast in the role, his creative input into QOS and SP, poor diction, etc. As for Connery in YOLT- it's not his sharpest performance but it's still light years ahead of Craig's portrayal. - PK wrote:
- Craig has his faults, but I can't say I've ever noticed him sleepwalking through a scene, let alone an entire film.
What do you consider Craig's faults, out of curiosity? I think he sleepwalked through the majority of SP. His scenes with Lucia and Madeleine especially-- the overacting in the "Madeleine! Look at me!" scene is particularly cringeworthy as there's no conviction in his performance. |

Thank you. I just got through reading the thread and don't think I have anything to add to it. You really have some great writers full of insight on this site that I really appreciate and they make me like the movies all the more. It certainly is an interesting movie and like I said I did enjoy watching it again and will in the future. Someone else mentioned how it could have had the potential to make a minor cult hit and I agree with that. I have the same feeling about The Man With The Golden Gun. It's just such an odd, quirky put together film I can't help wonder how it would be viewed if nobody had ever heard of James Bond in the first place. If there had never been a Bond novel or movie and suddenly this weird concoction called TMWTGG came out what would people think of it? To me I feel like I must have dropped a tab of acid before it came on and viewed as an individual film it quite works IMO. Even Pepper fits in that bizarre landscape. |

| Thing with MR is that even watched with allowances for the Moore era's excesses, it still goes 'too far'.
I mean, I know it was an editing trick and the animal itself is blameless ... but by God I hope that frigging double-taking pigeon met an unpleasant end soon afterwards. |

To think TMWTGG came out a mere 10 years after GF, too... The writers surely did drop a tab of acid when brainstorming. Makes sense when you think about how quickly TMWTGG was released after LALD. Had to come up with something quick to help solidify Moore as a worthy Connery successor. |

| Best not to speculate what they were on when the idea of Doctor No turning out to be a monkey was mooted . |

| I still think he had more personality onscreen in Tomb Raider even with that silly accent.
A watered down Steve McQueen impression given by an automation is not 007 EON. Just saying... |

| 'Pulling your goalie' is a euphemism for gentlemen's self-entertainment I'd not heard before. Some sort of Canadian ice-hockey reference, I'm guessing . |
